The Department has developed a resource pack called 'Let's Get Moving: Your complete guide to becoming more active' to support the primary care physical activity care pathway intervention (PACP), which aims to get sedentary people more active. The Let's Get Moving resource has recently undergone intensive user testing with target groups and is being used in a London pilot of the PACP.Primary care trusts throughout England will be encouraged to deliver the PACP from spring 2009, at which stage copies of the resource will be made available to participating general practitioner surgeries along with other measures to support the aims of the intervention.

Following a successful pilot in 2006 in which 43 schools were followed, the National School Step-O-Meter programme (Schools on the Move) was launched in a further 250 schools, located in deprived areas, in July 2007.A full evaluation of the pilot year was undertaken by the London Sport Institute, Middlesex University in September 2006, which showed encouraging increases in children’s activity levels. A further monitoring and evaluation study has been designed and we are expecting a full report on the initiative in December 2009.A copy of the evaluation report for the Schools on the Move pilot year has been placed in the Library.

Given that it is now 30 years since Virginia Wade won the women’s singles title at Wimbledon, and that very belatedly indeed the All England Club has recognised the unanswerable ethical case for equal prize money, in what way is the right hon. Lady using her very considerable powers of influence to encourage far more women to take up the game of tennis and to increase access to the sport for girls at state schools, and thereby perhaps to maximise the chance that before too long we might have another ladies’ Wimbledon winner?

Those of us on this side of the House would find very little difficulty in disagreeing with anything that the hon. Gentleman says sitting on that side of the House. The fact that a very substantial number of school sports colleges now offer tennis is one of the best ways of getting young people from state schools to play those sports—tennis, rugby, rowing, sailing and so forth—that for too long have been limited, or overly-limited, to young people from private schools. Opening up opportunity is how we get more champions.

A number of initiatives are under way to promote healthy lifestyles in people aged 50 and over. As part of the partnerships for older peoples project (POPP) initiative the Department has awarded funding of over £39 million to 19 local authority-led partnerships across England to improve health and well being outcomes for older people. Each pilot site, which will be operational by 1 May 2006 will develop, test and evaluate, a range of different ways of providing more support and care for local older people, which will enable them to have a better quality of life and remain in control of their own lives for as long as possible. Several of the pilot sites include health promotion activities as part of their wide-ranging projects. For example:"The cross-Government leaflet, ““Are you over 50?””, is being revised and will be available April 2006. The emphasis is very much on active ageing.""Nine local exercise action pilots (LEAP) are under way across England, jointly funded by the Department, the Countryside Agency and Sport England. The pilots are testing different community approaches to increasing physical activity in deprived areas. Three of the pilots based at Ashton, Leigh and Wigan, Nottingham city and West of Cornwall Primary Care Trust have a specific focus on older people."
