To ask the hon. Member for Battersea, representing the Church Commissioners, how many listed churches have been demolished in each of the last five years.
The Church Commissioners can only answer questions about the buildings in the care of the Church of England. Of the 16,000 church buildings in its care, over 12,000 are listed.
Demolition of a church is a last resort and happens very rarely, and only after all other options have been considered. Over the last five years, only one listed church building has been demolished, and consent has been granted for the demolition of one further case, which is yet to be implemented. In both cases, the churches had significant structural flaws arising from their construction or defects in their building materials, making repair impossible or too costly. In both cases, alternative provision has been and continues to be made for the worshipping community.

Promoting freedom of religion or belief as a means of enhancing tolerance and inclusion will remain a key part of our ongoing engagement with the Government of Sudan.

We are aware of reports of the demolition of this place of Christian worship and my officials continue to monitor such incidents closely. We have not discussed this specific incident with the Chinese authorities.
We remain concerned about restrictions on freedom of religion or belief in China and reports of the destruction of places of worship. We raised our concerns over restrictions on freedom of religion or belief directly with the Chinese authorities at the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue in Beijing on 27 June 2017. We also issued an Item IV statement at the 35th UN Human Rights Council in the same month reiterating our concerns. We will continue to raise these concerns about human rights with the Chinese authorities at every opportunity.

We remain concerned at the continued persecution of Christians in Sudan, including the alleged destruction of churches. Officials from our Embassy in Khartoum immediately raised our concerns directly with the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs when these particular allegations surfaced in January 2017. More widely, we continue to urge the Government of Sudan to uphold the commitment to their citizens in the Interim Constitution of 2005, within which religious freedom is enshrined.
