Mr Gregory Campbell (East Londonderry) (DUP):
Severe hardship is being experienced by businesses, consumers and families right across the United Kingdom—not just normal costs of living but fuel costs, which are exceptionally high and getting higher. As we speak, protests are being organised for next week. We need action as quickly as possible in order to ensure that these protests do not escalate out of control, and that people see that politics matters and that Governments listen and take action, rather than just offer words.

I know that the hon. Gentleman’s constituents and all of those in Northern Ireland are concerned about the impact that the war in Iran is having on them. I was in Northern Ireland just a few weeks ago, where I spoke directly to party leaders and we announced what we are doing on heating oil. Obviously, fuel duty is frozen until September and energy bills have been reduced. We have also made it clear that we will not tolerate profiteering or unfair practices, which was a particular concern raised with me when I was over in Northern Ireland. The most important thing we can do is to de-escalate the conflict and get the strait of Hormuz open, and that is why I am co-hosting the summit on Friday in order to make progress on both those fronts.

A drone strike on RAF Akrotiri resulted in no injuries or deaths. There have been no other strikes against UK military bases in the region.

As stated in my answer to Question 105155, the UK and Ireland are jointly committed to deepening our security and defence cooperation on the full range of threats facing both our countries. That includes countering Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, pursuant to WPQ 105155 answered on 20 January 2026, whether the topic of Russia, Iranian and Venezuelan registered oil tankers in British and Irish waters was discussed at the meeting on 3 December 2025

While this particular issue was not on the agenda for that call, the Ministers did discuss countering Russian aggression and our support to Ukraine, and we continue to discuss priority issues with our Irish counterparts as and when they arise, including at Ministerial level.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if she will hold discussions with her Irish counterpart on undertaking joint efforts to identify Russia, Iranian and Venezuelan registered oil tankers in British and Irish waters that may be avoiding sanctions on oil.

The UK and Ireland continue to discuss how we can improve our security cooperation, including maritime and cyber security. On 3 December, the Foreign Secretary spoke to her counterpart Helen McEntee, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Defence, about defence, security and other matters.
That follows the commitments made by the Prime Minister and Taoiseach at the UK-Ireland Summit in March 2025 to deepen defence cooperation.
Can the Foreign Secretary declare from the Dispatch Box that an Iran with no nuclear weapons is now a more likely prospect as a result of the actions of the Israeli and American forces over the past 10 days?

I recognise the point that the hon. Gentleman has made, but let me make this clear to him. Once a country has acquired the ability to enrich uranium to 60%, that scientific knowledge is there and does not go away. Ultimately, this will require a diplomatic solution. That is what President Trump is pushing for, and that is what the UK Government want to see as well.
The outgoing President of the United States has indicated that he has been told where and when the Israeli Government will respond to the Iranian terror threat. Have our Government been informed?

I think that you, Mr Speaker, and other Members will understand that it is not appropriate to comment on that in the House.

The Foreign Secretary sent a clear message during his meeting with his Iranian counterpart on 17 January. The Foreign Secretary made clear that Iran must use its influence with the Houthis to prevent further strikes, and that Iran must cease its support to the Houthi's illegal and unacceptable attacks. We will continue to work with international partners to deter Iran's destabilising activity, including by holding Iran to account in multilateral fora and through sanctions; addressing Iranian weapons proliferation; and maintaining our permanent defence presence in the region.

The UK Government regularly assesses Iran's political, financial and military support to several militant and proscribed groups, including Hezbollah. Such activity compromises the region's security and Iran must bear responsibility for the actions of the groups it has long supported. We currently sanction more than 350 Iranian individuals and entities, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps in its entirety. As the former Foreign Secretary announced, a new sanctions regime will be in place by the end of the year, giving greater powers to make designations for destabilising Iranian activity in the region.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will make representations to his Iranian counterpart on the arrest of Christians for sharing their faith.
Despite constitutional recognition, the persecution of Christians has been continuous, systemic, and institutionalised. We regularly raise the treatment of Christians in Iran with the Iranian Government, and we continue to take action with the international community to press Iran to improve its poor record on all human rights issues.

We regularly raise human rights, including continued persecution of religious minorities with the Iranian government at all levels. I raised our concerns about the persecution of religious and ethnic minorities in Iran, including Christians, directly with my Iranian counterpart during my visit to Tehran on 5 August. We will continue to support the work done by the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will make representations to the Iranian Government on the treatment of Pastor Victor Bet Tamraz, Amin Afshar Naderi and Hadi Asgari in prison in that country.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will make representations to the Iranian Government on the treatment of Pastor Victor Bet Tamraz, Amin Afshar Naderi and Hadi Asgari in prison in that country.
The Government is aware of reports regarding Pastor Victor Bet Tamraz, Amin Afshar Naderi and Hadi Asgari. The Government notes the worrying trend of harassment of Christians in Iran and strongly condemns any mistreatment of religious minorities in the country. We regularly raise our concerns about the human rights situation in Iran both in London and Tehran. We call on Iran to cease harassment of religious minorities and fulfil its international and domestic obligations to allow freedom of religion to all Iranians.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will discuss freedom of religion with his Iranian counterpart.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will discuss freedom of religion with his Iranian counterpart.
I discuss many issues with my Iranian counterparts. I have repeatedly called on the Iranian Government to end all persecution of individuals on the basis of their faith, and to guarantee the human rights of all Iranians, regardless of belief, and I will continue to do so.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, whether any trade missions to Iran are planned involving businesses from the UK in 2016.

The UK government fully supports expanding our trade relationship with Iran. UK Trade and Investment will be leading a whole of government approach to engage with UK companies to ensure that UK businesses are well equipped to benefit from the commercial opportunities that will arise from sanction relief.
There is a desire on both sides to build a long-term bilateral relationship based on future partnership, where trade and investment is a key pillar. We plan to take further trade delegations to Iran in the near future across a number of sectors where UK companies are best placed to benefit from commercial opportunities.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will make representations to the Saudi Arabian government on future relationships with Iran following recent developments in relations between those countries.

We are deeply concerned about the escalation of tensions in the region. We have made representations at the highest levels and have urged all parties in the region to urgently show restraint and responsibility, and to resolve tensions.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will raise at the UN the potential effect of the recent agreement with Iran on nuclear weapons on the lifting of economic sanctions on that country on support for Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist groups.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will raise at the UN the potential effect of the recent agreement with Iran on nuclear weapons on the lifting of economic sanctions on that country on support for Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist groups.
Iran's support to militant groups across the Middle East, including Hezbollah and Hamas, is a source of concern. The Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action does not address this issue as the E3+3 negotiations with Iran focused on the nuclear issue. But the prohibition on export of arms to and from Iran will continue and we will continue to respond - with our partners - to Iranian interference in the region. We call upon Iran to play a more constructive role in the region.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations he has made to the Iranian authorities about the persecution and detention of members of the Bahá'í faith in that country.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations he has made to the Iranian authorities about the persecution and detention of members of the Bahá'í faith in that country.
We have repeatedly expressed our concern at the treatment of the Baha’i community in Iran, including the sentencing of seven Baha'i leaders in Iran to 20 years imprisonment and the regular harassment the community suffers from. We raised the treatment of Baha’is with the UN Special Rapporteur at the UN Human Rights Council in March 2014, and in our contacts with the Iranian authorities. We will continue to call on the Iranian government to ensure that all its citizens are able to exercise their right to freedom of religion, free from persecution and harassment.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with his German and US counterparts on securing the unconditional release of Pastor Saeed Abedini from prison in Iran.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with his German and US counterparts on securing the unconditional release of Pastor Saeed Abedini from prison in Iran.
We remain deeply concerned about the detention and treatment of Pastor Saeed Abedini. We have called publicly for the Iranian Government to release him and to end all persecution of individuals on the basis of their faith. We have not discussed this particular case with German or US officials, but discuss regularly with them action we can take to improve human rights in Iran.
That this House notes the election in Iran of Hassan Rouhani as President; further notes that his election is being claimed as a victory for moderation; and calls on the Government to open discussions immediately with the new President to ensure that prisoners of conscience in Iran including the imprisoned Pastor Saeed Abedini who has been held in prison since September 2012 on a 'crime' of promoting Christianity through house churches and sentenced to eight years, can be released with immediate effect.
