We urgently convened the UN Security Council following the coup and secured a unanimous statement expressing concern at the situation. We convened the UN Security Council again on 5 March. We welcome the strong statements from the UN Secretary General in response to the coup and subsequent violence. We are working with his office, and with partners, to explore all options to seek a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
As a champion of the rules based international order, we are working closely with partners to deliver a strong international response, including in our role as President of the G7. We secured G7 statements on 3 and 23 February, which condemned the coup and the violent response unleashed on peaceful protestors. Working with partners, including the US and Canada, we have sanctioned 9 military officers, including the Commander-in-Chief, for their role in the coup. We are working with partners to consider further action to apply pressure on the military.

The Foreign Secretary met with Burmese State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on 20 September in Burma and raised the importance of the safe, voluntary and dignified return of refugees to Rakhine State, and ensuring those responsible for human rights violations are held to account. I spoke with the Burmese Minister for International Cooperation Kyaw Tin on 1 November to: stress the UK's serious concern at the 30 October announcement of the Governments of Burma and Bangladesh that refugee repatriation would commence in mid-November; and underline that the Commission of Inquiry needs to be independent and credible, draw on all available evidence and lead to a judicial process.

The British Ambassador raised the UK's concerns about the treatment of civilians in Kachin State during the current military offensive in his meeting with the Commander in Chief of Burma's military on 3 May.
In a statement published on gov.uk on 11 May the Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific expressed concern about the latest military offensive in Kachin and called on the Burmese military to fulfil its duty to respect international humanitarian law, ensure access for humanitarian organisations and allow the 2000 civilians trapped by the fighting to leave to safe areas. He called on all parties to the conflict to cease fighting, protect civilians, and return fully to peace talks.
What pressure can be applied to the authorities in the region and particularly to the office of Aung San Suu Kyi? Tributes have been paid to her in the past for her work to bring people together to try to bring an end to the onslaught and murder that continue in the region.

Of course Aung San Suu Kyi has an important role to play. She has a voice, and she needs to use it to stop the persecution and, with the Burmese military and with what is effectively her Government, to create routes home for the Rohingya people, giving them security, rather than the fleeing and persecution we have seen. It is not just for the British Government, although we are doing this, but for all international voices to step up, come together and make that abundantly clear to her.
In assisting the Burmese nation and the new regime with international development, will the Secretary of State ensure that that regime is aware of the ongoing persecution of minorities in Burma, which needs to be dealt with as the new nation state takes shape?

We will of course raise those issues. We know from so many other parts of the world that the Governments that are successful are the inclusive
Governments with respect to minorities. One of the pieces of work that will be under way will be to double our support for a governance project that is taking place in the Burmese Parliament. That has seen our House of Commons Clerk go there in recent years. We will be doubling the number of Clerks there to help to ensure that the Burmese democracy can flourish, as ours has.

We welcome the overall widening of media freedom under this Burmese Government. However, we are deeply concerned by the intimidation, detention and sentencing of several reporters in Burma in recent months, which contrary to the longer positive trend is further restricting Burma’s media environment.
Our ambassador has raised our concerns about the detention of journalists with Deputy Minister of Information Ye Htut, and the cases of the five journalists sentenced to 10 years hard labour were also discussed during the first EU-Burma Human Rights Dialogue in May. We will continue to raise the issue of media freedom in discussions with the Burmese Government and in international fora.

We welcomed President Thein Sein's order to release all prisoners and persons facing trial for political offences in December 2013. However, we are concerned there are individuals in prison whose status is disputed.
During my visit to Burma at the end of January, I personally raised the issue of political prisoners, including a number of individual cases, with Soe Thane, Minister of the President's Office and urged the government to release all remaining political prisoners. I also raised the issue with Shwe Mann, Speaker of the Lower House, concerning activists who are being charged under legislation which is not in line with international standards. We will continue to raise our concerns with the Burmese Government to ensure that its review mechanism is comprehensive and transparent, leading to the release of all political prisoners.

As I set out during Foreign and Commonwealth Office oral questions on 22 January 2012, Official Report, columns 150-51, we continue to call for the cessation of violence in Kachin State at every opportunity. During my visit to Burma in December, I made clear to the Burmese Government the need to make progress on resolving the conflict in Kachin State and to move towards a lasting peaceful political settlement.
In my statement of 3 January, I expressed the British Government's deep concern at the escalation in hostilities in Kachin State, and the risk that continued violence
poses to the chances of a lasting peace. I emphasised the need for military commanders in Burma to heed their President's calls for an end to hostilities.
Our ambassador to Burma reiterated these concerns with senior members of the Burmese Government on 16 and 19 January.
