To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of the UK‑Germany Strategic Science and Technology Partnership on Northern Ireland.
The UK‑Germany Strategic Science and Technology Partnership is designed to strengthen bilateral collaboration on key technologies, providing opportunities for researchers and businesses in the UK, including those based in Northern Ireland, to benefit from leading cutting-edge research and development with German partners. All relevant UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) initiatives, such as the lead agency agreement between the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the German Research Foundation, are open to applicants from across the whole of the UK.

Further to my previous answer of 19 May 2026, officials are analysing consultation responses, including submissions from industry and other stakeholders. The Government expects to publish its response to the consultation, setting out next steps, by the end of 2026.

The UK‑Germany Strategic Science and Technology Partnership was launched alongside the Kensington Treaty in July 2025 to accelerate the development of transformative technologies through closer UK-Germany collaboration. Early outcomes include £6 million joint funding for quantum research and development, investment in applied photonics research in Glasgow to help businesses bring new products to market, and an AI partnership between centres in Edinburgh and Stuttgart to speed up AI adoption in industry and the public sector.

An Emergency Lane Keeping System (ELKS) is a technology that warns the driver of unintended lane departures and corrects the vehicle’s course to avoid crossing solid lane markings. As with other safety systems, it defaults to being on every time the vehicle is started. This ensures safety benefits are not undermined by drivers having the systems permanently switched off, either deliberately or accidentally. However, there is typically a simple method for the driver to switch it off each time, should they wish to.
The Government recently consulted on mandating ELKS in Great Britain alongside a number of other vehicle safety technologies as part of the Road Safety Strategy. This consultation closed on 11 May 2026 and my Department will be setting out next steps in due course.

The Ministry of Defence works closely with the F-35 Joint Program Office to protect sensitive defence technologies associated with the F-35 programme.
There are comprehensive security, counter-intelligence, and export-control arrangements in place to prevent any unauthorised access, transfer, or exploitation of advanced capabilities by third parties, including the Chinese Government.
We continue to engage regularly with our US counterparts to ensure these protections remain robust, up to date, and fully aligned with our shared national-security priorities.

The Trader Support Service (TSS) is operating smoothly and consistently. To date, over 54.5K businesses have registered for the TSS and more than 40.5K of those businesses regularly use it. The service has processed over 1.25m goods movements, involving more than 4.6m consignments, playing an important role in ensuring the free flow of goods within the UK’s internal market.
Governance structures are in place to review the TSS’ performance and IT functionality to ensure it continues to meet its intended purpose. HMRC also monitors customer satisfaction scores, customer feedback and management information to continuously improve the service. The customer satisfaction score in 2023 was 85%.

Absolutely. We know we have a strong cluster there, and universities such as Ulster University are at the heart of that innovation. We will do exactly as the hon. Member said and make sure we can replicate as much of that clustering around the UK.

Gigabit-capable networks can deliver the broadband services that businesses will rely on for decades to come, paving the way for new developments in commerce, trade and society and bringing benefits including improved productivity, jobs and economic growth.
Our £5 billion Project Gigabit is about future-proofing the broadband needs for generations to come.

Further evaluations of the impacts of gigabit broadband will be published during the period of deployment of Project Gigabit.
Some small charities are working exceptionally hard in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly using technology to deliver much needed clean drinking water to those areas. The hon. Gentleman is absolutely right to draw attention to the challenges posed by climate change, particularly to the countries nearest the Sahara. UK Aid is working very closely with them, and investments in technology are helping to address that and provide drinking water for many hundreds of thousands of people in sub-Saharan Africa.
In sub-Saharan Africa, one of the most comprehensive issues is the provision of clean water to many hundreds of thousands of people, and many small charities are doing that. Will the Minister work closely with them to ensure the provision of technology to develop that in future?
