To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what steps the UK proposes to take to increase the resilience of communities in Mali and other Sahelian countries to drought and food shortages.

The Sahel is locked into a cycle of humanitarian crises due to chronic vulnerabilities that require long term solutions to stop people slipping to future food insecurity.
The UK is currently supporting improved resilience in the Sahel through our core funding to the World Bank, United Nations and European Commission which among other things funds social protection and livelihoods support programmes in Sahelian countries.

In September 2012, the Department for International Development (DFID) accepted the recommendations of the Independent Commission for Aid Impact report on the Humanitarian Emergency Response in the Horn of Africa. In March 2013, DFID will report on progress in implementing these recommendations, including on agreeing triggers for early action with selected partners. This report will be available publically on DFID's website.
