That this House recognises the historical and cultural significance that brewing holds in the United Kingdom; appreciates the importance in employment terms that brewing continues to play in the United Kingdom and the enjoyment that beer brings to millions of Britons and visitors everyday; recognises that the great British pint is not only the taste of the nation but also responsible for the direct employment, in brewing and distribution, of 107,000 British workers, as well as around a further 700,000 indirectly in retailing and related activities, and in addition supports United Kingdom farmers through the utilisation of 600,000 tonnes of United Kingdom malting barley; notes the launch of the Beer Naturally Campaign by a group of Britain's brewers to promote a better understanding of the heritage flavours and benefits of beer as a social drink; and calls upon the Government to support the efforts of the United Kingdom Brewing Industry to promote awareness of Britain's national drink and its major contribution to the United Kingdom economy.

That this House notes that it is the view of the union shop stewards at Bass Brewers that the proposed acquisition of Bass Brewers by Interbrew should be fully supported by the DTI; and further notes that there is great local concern, particularly in Burton-upon-Trent, that if the Interbrew offer were to be lost then any other proposal may be likely to bring greater uncertainly to the future job prospects in the UK brewing industry,
