Her Majesty's Government is concerned by the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel and more broadly in surrounding areas such as Burkina Faso. We remain in dialogue with French military counterparts and continue to provide non-combat assistance to the French-led counter terror mission Operation BARKHANE with our deployment of three CH47 chinook helicopters.

Her Majesty's Government is concerned about the security situation in Sahel and the spread of insecurity across the region, including to countries such as Burkina Faso. The Ministry of Defence provides direct support to the region in the form of three CH47 chinook helicopters, who provide non-combat assistance in the French-led counter terror mission Operation BARKHANE, and we deliver training to G5 Sahel militaries through the EU Training Mission Mali. The UK Government also supports the G5 Sahel Joint Force, which combats terrorist activities in Burkina Faso and the wider region.

Whilst there have been no formal requests for military support in the event of a no deal Brexit, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) has engaged with other Government Departments and local authorities. This engagement, including at Cabinet level, has resulted in the development of a package of 3,500 regular and reserve personnel put on standby to support the implementation of 'no deal' contingency plans. These personnel are in addition to existing MOD plans to respond to incidents in the UK under the Military Aid to the Civil Authorities policy.

The maintenance of public order is the responsibility of the police. There are no plans to utilise military personnel for public order in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

102 Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) pilots have been trained at RAF bases in the last ten years. Of these, 30 RSAF pilots have undertaken training at RAF Valley as part of their training programme.

The RAF Police, together with RAF Valley authorities, maintains routine contact with the North Wales Police. The current assessment is that there is a negligible potential security risk to North Wales associated with training Saudi pilots at RAF Valley so there have been no specific discussions with North Wales Police on this subject. All such assessments are kept under constant review.
