The human rights situation in Iran is of serious concern. This includes the treatment of Baha'i students following the 1991 memorandum. The Foreign Secretary raised our human rights concerns with the Iranian Government during his visit to Iran on 9-10 December, as did I during Iranian Foreign Minister Aragchi's visit to London in February this year.

The Foreign Secretary raised our human rights concerns with the Iranian Government during his visit to Iran on 9-10 December, as did I during Iranian Foreign Minister Aragchi's visit to London in February this year.

The hon. Lady is right to detect the disruptive hand and the destabilising agency of Iran in the region and certainly in the supply of missiles to Hezbollah and weapons to the Houthis. What Iran is up to is well chronicled and, together with our friends and partners, we are working at the United Nations and elsewhere to bring maximum pressure on the Iranians to cease and desist from their activities.

The UK government is aware of reports regarding the death of Farhang Amiri in Yazd. The UK notes the worrying trend of harassment of religious minorities in Iran (including of the Baha'i community) and strongly condemns any violence towards and mistreatment of minority groups in the country. We have not specifically raised the case of the death of Farhang Amiri, but we regularly raise our concerns about the treatment of religious minorities in Iran both in London and Tehran. We call on Iran to cease harassment of all religious minorities and to fulfil its international and domestic obligations to allow freedom of religion to all Iranians.

I raised the issue of the Baha’is and other minorities in meetings with the Foreign Minister when he visited in March. I also have regular meetings with the chargé d’affaires—the ambassador in waiting—in London.

We continue to have serious concerns about Iran’s support for Hamas and the military wing of Hezbollah, which reportedly includes the provision of financial resources and training as well as the supply of military equipment. We call on Iran to end such support, which directly undermines the prospects for lasting peace in the region, and to abide by all relevant UN obligations.

In our meetings—including meetings held during my visit to Iran last August, and my subsequent meetings with Foreign Minister Zarif, whom I see fairly often because he is involved in the International Syria Support Group—we regularly raise the issue of the persecution of minorities in Iran, which is one of many human rights concerns that we have about that country.

The UK has repeatedly expressed concern at the treatment of the Baha’i community in Iran. I met a representative of the Baha'i community on 10 February to discuss the community's concerns. The UK’s non-resident Chargé d’Affaires to Iran discussed the matter with the Iranian authorities during his last visit to Iran on 17 February.

The hon. Lady will be aware that the Prime Minister had his first meeting with the Prime Minister of Iran at the United Nations General Assembly and very much put those points down. She is right that Iran must question its role in the region. It must ask itself whether it wants to be a part of the problem or a part of the solution. We have spoken about Hamas and Hezbollah. Hezbollah is effectively propping up the Assad regime, because he is losing the officer class, which is depleted because of the war.

The previous Minister, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, my right hon. Friend the Member for North East Bedfordshire (Alistair Burt), expressed
his concern about the murder, and called on Iran to conduct a full investigation. We are yet to receive an update from the Iranian Government.

I thank the hon. Lady for raising that point. I am absolutely aware of that concern, which is a key concern of the UN special rapporteur. As I said in answer to the previous question, our country lobbied extremely hard to ensure that the mandate was extended for a further year and will do so again in the future precisely so that these concerns can be addressed.

We remain deeply concerned about the situation of the Baha'i community in Iran. This religious group continues to be systematically persecuted by the Iranian regime. I am aware of an apparent increase in harassment, particularly in Semnan. This includes the closure of businesses run by Baha'is, restricted access to education by Baha'i students and the imprisonment in poor conditions of infants alongside their Baha'i mothers. Over 100 Baha'is are imprisoned in Iran, including the seven Baha'i leaders jailed in 2008. We continue to monitor this minority group's persecution and to condemn publicly their appalling treatment by the regime.
