That this House acknowledges the Pope's rededication to the principles of Rerum Novarum (enunciated over 100 years ago) calling for a just wage for workers and for their right to membership of trades unions and of co-operative movements protected by law; welcomes his condemnation of the rise in unemployment and poverty resulting in human misery as well as his reaffirmation of a concern for community as opposed to individualism; affirms its opposition to achieving this through totalitarianism; endorses therefore the social clauses of Maastricht as first step in nurturing socialism's positive kernels; and calls on her Majesty's Government to re-examine its decision to reject the Social Chapter.
