The previous Secretary of State had not met the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission or the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland to discuss the recognition of same sex marriage in Northern Ireland. The Department has been focused on securing a restoration of the devolved institutions precisely so that important decisions relating to issues such as same sex marriage are considered by locally accountable politicians.

Northern Ireland Office Ministers have a regular programme of engagement which includes community and faith groups. These meetings cover a wide range of topics. The focus of recent engagement has been the restoration of a functioning Northern Ireland Assembly, precisely so important decisions relating to issues such as same sex marriage are considered by locally accountable politicians.
I would welcome assurances from the Minister that she and the Secretary of State have already met the leaders of the four main Churches in Northern Ireland to discuss the sensitive issue of the recognition of same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland. That assurance would be very helpful.

I can certainly confirm that my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State and the Department have regular contact with Church leaders. As I said, it is an important issue, but it really is an issue for a future devolved Government to look at.

I am engaging with the hon. Member for East Antrim (Sammy Wilson) in his role as Minister of Finance and Personnel about the Government's proposals in the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, with a view to ensuring that the Bill works in the UK as a whole.

The Government received over 228,000 responses, along with nineteen petitions, to its consultation on extending marriage in England and Wales to same sex couples. In the event that a Government consultation is likely to receive a high volume of responses, it is not standard practice to collect either names or the contact details of those individuals that respond. We are, therefore, unable to identify responses from individuals in Northern Ireland.
