To ask the Secretary of State for Education, how many primary school teachers in each parliamentary constituency in the East of England have a science degree.
The following table provides the headcount number and percentage of all regular teachers[1] in service in primary schools in each constituency in the East of England with a degree in a science subject in November 2013. This is the latest information available.

The Allocation of Science and Research 2011-15 was published in December 2010 and gives full details of the baseline expenditure for Science and Research for the financial year 2011-12 onwards:

Since then, announcements have been made for additional capital expenditure in science and research totalling £1.52 billion. These investments will be made through the seven UK research councils, the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the UK Space Agency.
Britain has an excellent track record in scientific research and development, despite historically low levels of funding. For this to continue, and to continue to drive so much economic growth, sustained funding is required. Can the Prime Minister assure me that this will be delivered in this Parliament and the next comprehensive spending review?

Obviously, I cannot bind the hands of the next comprehensive spending review, but in this spending review we made an important decision to protect the science budget. It would have been an easy target for reductions, and perhaps we could have spent the money on politically more attractive things, but we decided to take the long-term view and to save the science budget because it is a key part of Britain’s future.

That this House welcomes the Association for Science Education Outdoor Science Working Group's report entitled Outdoor Science, sponsored by the Nuffield Foundation, which recognises the need to reverse the decline in the provision and condition of outdoor teaching in science and mathematics; further welcomes the six recommendations in the report which seek to improve and optimise best practice in outdoor science and mathematics education; recognises the wider educational benefits of teaching and learning science through fieldwork in the natural and built environments including teamwork, motivation and its potential to influence positively the choice of science as a future subject of study; and therefore urges the Government to develop a co-ordinated programme of teacher training in fieldwork to promote effective pedagogy and to support a coherent approach towards the increased uptake and improved quality of teaching and learning through fieldwork in science and mathematics education.

That this House notes the UK's proud history of excellence in science and engineering, whereby it produces over 10 per cent. of global scientific output with just one per cent. of global population; believes that continued investment in research is vital in order to meet the technological and social challenges of the 21st century, and to continue to attract high-tech industries to invest in the UK; further believes that large cuts to science funding are a false economy, due to evidence that research investment fuels economic growth; further notes the increased investment in science by the UK's international competitors, such as the USA, France and Germany; further believes that investment in research and development is vital to help rebalance the economy towards hi-tech manufacturing and away from over-reliance on financial services; recognises the work of the Science is Vital coalition and the Campaign for Science and Engineering in arguing that the UK should seek to retain its role as a world leader in these fields; and calls on the Government to safeguard the UK's scientific excellence by providing a research investment strategy which builds on the success of UK science and engineering.
