To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, with reference to the Queen’s Speech 2019 background briefing notes, what proportion of the 6,000 new staff in primary care settings will be providing mental health support.
Many primary care professionals provide some form of mental health support for their patients. However, it is not possible to estimate what proportion of new staff being recruited to work in primary care settings will be providing such support, as this is dependent on patient demand, local decision making and ensuring patients and clinicians have a navigable system.
The Government is committed to growing the primary care workforce by 6,000 more doctors in general practice and 6,000 other professionals, such as physiotherapists and pharmacists. This is on top of the additional 20,000 primary care professionals NHS England is already providing funding towards recruiting.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, how many Improving Access to Psychological Therapies services are based within a primary care setting.
Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) services are provided and commissioned locally and therefore this information is not held centrally; however as part of the IAPT expansion to increase access to an additional 600,000 per year 3,000 new mental health therapists will be co-located in primary care as set out in the General Practice Forward View. During 2016/17 and 2017/18, a targeted group of geographies will work to develop the evidence base for implementing new integrated IAPT services at scale, supported by wider investment in training and infrastructure. From 2018/19 integrated services will be rolled out across all clinical commissioning groups in line with the published trajectories.
The Health Secretary has just promised 5,000 new GPs, and GP Forward View mentions recruiting 500 GPs from overseas. I understand that Lincolnshire GP leaders are looking to recruit GPs from Spain, Poland and Romania. As we have heard, EU nationals who live in the UK and work in the NHS are seen by the Home Secretary as bargaining chips, which has made them incredibly nervous about their status. How successful does the Health Secretary think that that GP recruitment will be?

This is a time when all sides of the House should be seeking to reassure many people from other countries who do a fantastic job in our NHS that we believe they will have a great future here. The Home Secretary has prioritised doctors, paramedics and nurses in the shortage occupation lists, and in all countries that have points-based systems—look at what happens in Australia or Canada—the needs of the health service and health care system are usually given very high priority.
