That this House notes the United States Administration's request to send British troops into areas currently patrolled by American-led forces; is aware of the statement by the Secretary of State for Defence that he is inclined to comply; believes that such a move would significantly increase the danger to British troops in Iraq; and therefore calls for a vote in the House before Her Majesty's Government takes a final decision on this matter.

That this House notes that, while women in Iraq suffered considerably under Saddam Hussein's regime, Iraq was a secular society in which they were also able to take up employment and participate in public life; further notes that the interim Iraqi Governing Council is considering changing the personal status code which was the legal basis for this; shares the alarm of Iraqi women's organisations at the prospect of retrogressive legislation being introduced; believes that women's full and equal participation in society is a necessary prerequisite for democracy; and supports the legitimate struggle of Iraqi women to defend and improve their human rights.

That this House congratulates Spirit Aid's Children of the Rubble efforts to get medical aid to mountain villages in Afghanistan, but joins with their horror at the conditions that people are living in, with people dying of tuberculosis, diphtheria, malaria, whooping cough and gastroenteritis; notes that only five per cent. of the rural population have access to clean drinking water, hospitals have no medicines and doctors have not been paid in over a year; and, with millions of people still in refugee camps, calls upon the Government actively to make sure that the aid promised gets through to the people of Afghanistan and to make sure the people of Iraq will not also be left with children dying in the rubble after the bombing has stopped.
