Mr. Oaten: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what figures his Department has collated on the number of cases of Group D
streptococcus in each of the last five years. [151945]
Miss Melanie Johnson: Almost all group D streptococcal infections in humans are associated with enterococci or `Streptococcus bovis
group'. Data received by the Health Protection Agency Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre under a voluntary reporting system
are shown in table 1.

shown in the table.

Mr. Oaten: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what measures he is taking to implement the Royal College of Obstetricians and
Gynaecologists Green Top Guidelines on Group B streptococcus. [151946]
Dr. Ladyman: The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' guidelines on the Prevention of Early Onset Neonatal Group B
Streptococcus Disease have been circulated to all fellows and members of the College. Ministers have asked the UK National Screening
Committee (NSC) to undertake further work to assess the existing evidence on screening and treatment for Group B Streptococcus in
pregnancy in the UK. A recent workshop agreed a number of actions to reduce the risk of GBS infection, including ensuring better
information for professionals and pregnant women, more consistent and appropriate advice and treatment for women at increased risk,
and further research. The NSC will take forward a programme of work in the light of this report during 2004.

Mr. Oaten: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment he has made of best practice in the treatment of Group B
Streptococcal infections in (a) the USA and (b) the EU; and if he will make a statement. [116918]
Jacqui Smith: The Department of Health has not done any assessment of best practice in the treatment of this disease in the United
States of America or the European Union.
This is a matter of clinical practice, which we know has been receiving much research attention. We expect that obstetric units will
have in place a standard form of practice based on the various guidance which currently exists while awaiting consideration of the
guidelines, currently being produced by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which we expect will be published in
December 2003. These guidelines will take account of all published work in this area.
