My Lords, Abdul Rahman has been released. On 22 March, my honourable friend Kim Howells made a public statement expressing the Government’s concerns over the charges facing Mr Rahman. On 23 March, my honourable friend Ian Pearson summoned the Afghan chargé to relay our concerns. The British Ambassador in Kabul also raised these concerns on that day with the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

My Lords, we monitor closely the situation concerning the small San community in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Our High Commission staff last visited the reserve and resettlement areas in June 2005. They have visited the area three times in the past two years and officials plan to make further visits in the near future. We discuss the issue with the Botswana Government and with other interested parties at regular intervals.

My Lords, we are concerned about reports of human rights abuses in Papua, and we raise those regularly with the government of Indonesia. We also encourage the Indonesian Government to engage in dialogue with Papuan representatives and to proceed with full implementation of the special autonomy legislation.
We are encouraged by the president’s recent statements that his government wish to solve the issue of Papua through dialogue,"““in a peaceful, just and dignified manner””."
