That this House congratulates BBC's `Here and Now' on its exposure of EU grants aimed at increasing the number of greyhounds bred in Ireland; notes that the Irish Government expects the number of dogs exported to be increased to 15,000 over the next five years, a 50 per cent. increase, most of them to the United Kingdom; notes that leading greyhound vet, Roger Baker, estimates that already 10,000 healthy greyhounds are destroyed unnecessarily each year, and many more by barbarically cruel means; and urges the Government to intervene with the European Commission to stop this entirely unjustified subsidy and work with the Irish Government to curtail the surplus of greyhounds that lead to such slaughter.
