To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the recent violence in Kenya between the Orma and Pokomo communities.

We are deeply concerned by the reports of violent clashes between the Orma and Pokomo groups in the Tana River District, which has claimed over 100 lives in recent weeks. The Government of Kenya has told us that 1,000 additional police officers are deploying to the area; and a disarmament programme and mediation efforts are continuing. We have urged the Government of Kenya to ensure that all those responsible are held accountable. We will continue to support the Government of Kenya's efforts to prevent conflict at national and provincial levels and help civil society organisations and religious groups to jointly manage and respond to local tensions.
