To introduce legislation to amend Optician's Act 1989 to delete references to spectacles as "medical appliances" now that EC rulings have confirmed they should not be so described & what were costs to taxpayer in European Court case regarding description of spectacles as "medical appliances" & if HMG are seeking reimbursement from opticians.

What guidance is given to opticians regarding fractional tolerance in sight testing, so that customers are not dissuaded from purchasing new "reading glasses" by unnecessary insistance on a very small difference of correction between two lenses in a pair of spectacles.

No of portable prescriptions for spectacles processed by unregistered opticians dispensaries since Health & Social Security Act 1984 came into force & how many unregistered dispensaries are currently operating. - Nearly 21,000 NHS vouchers were used to obtain spectacles from unregistered suppliers during 12-month to 30 June 1987.
