We assess that ongoing dialogue with all Middle East countries and partners remains critical for protecting security and stability in the region. We welcome any measures that serve to improve that dialogue and reduce tensions. We are concerned by the general risks of unintended escalation, which would not be in any party’s interests. We are in touch with our key partners and advising Iran not to take any escalatory steps.

The UK’s relationship with Iran is complex and based on a long history. Maintaining a bilateral relationship with Iran provides an opportunity to hold discussions on a range of issues, including our consular cases, human rights and Iran’s role in the region. We do not agree on everything, and there are many areas in which we have real concerns, but through dialogue we seek to influence Iran’s views on the subject that matter to the UK. I have no plans to make a statement at this time.

We continue to raise the issue of BBC Persian at all levels with the Iranian Government. Most recently, this was through the UK’s statement at the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran, on 11 March.

The Joint Comprehnesive Plan of Action is the product of 13 years of tireless diplomacy, and it is working, with Iran having reduced its stock of enriched uranium by 95 per cent. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed nine times that Iran is complying with the nuclear deal, most recently in February. The IAEA inspection regime agreed as part of the Iran nuclear deal is one of the most extensive and robust in the history of international nuclear accords. It remains a vitally important way of independently verifying that the deal is working and that Iran's nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful. This is why we are working hard to maintain the deal following the 8 May announcement of US withdrawal.

16 January 2016 marked Implementation Day of the Iran nuclear deal which, along with the subsequent lifting of international sanctions, has the potential to represent a new era in Iran’s relationship with the wider world. Since the Foreign Secretary reopened our Embassy in August 2015, significant progress has been made in developing the bilateral relationship between the UK and Iran. We welcomed Foreign Minister Zarif to London on 4 February 2016, in what was the first bilateral visit of an Iranian Foreign Minister since 2003. We look forward to the Business Secretary leading a trade delegation to Tehran in May, building on previous visits by Lord Maude and Transport Minister Robert Goodwill.

Following the regime-sponsored attack on our embassy in Tehran in November 2011, the UK's diplomatic relations with Iran were reduced to the lowest possible level. The UK and Iran nominated Sweden and Oman respectively, to act as protecting powers. This is the channel for bilateral business.
The UK participates actively in multilateral forums, such as the United Nations, of which Iran is also a member.
The UK is a member of the E3+3, which negotiates with Iran. These negotiations aim to find a diplomatic solution to the issue of Iran's nuclear programme.

The E3+3 have not yet set a date for their next meeting with Iran. E3+3 Political Directors will meet on 21 November to consider next steps. Iran needs to engage seriously if negotiations are to progress.
