That this House regards the G8 meeting at Evian as a missed opportunity; notes the failure of the leaders of the world's leading industrialised nations to make any meaningful progress on the very issues which blight the lives of the world's poorest people; further notes that the Prime Minister failed to support the French initiative to suspend subsidies on agricultural exports to Africa if the US did the same; notes the lack of progress in enabling African countries to import, manufacture or distribute cheap drugs to those suffering from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; further notes that these and other infectious diseases will kill a total of 14 million people this year; and regards the fact that the extra assistance offered following the meeting at Evian is less than one per cent. of the money spent on the war on Iraq as completely unacceptable.

That this House registers its grave concern about the unsustainable trade in bushmeat; notes that 150 million poor people, 1/8th of the world's poor, are dependent on wildlife for food and income, and that poor people face becoming poorer as they lose the vital natural resources on which they depend; further notes the threat from the unsustainable trade to highly endangered species, in particular the great apes; welcomes the report by the Department for International Development entitled 'Wildlife & Poverty Study' which highlights the link between bushmeat and poverty; and calls for urgent international action to tackle this development and conservation issue at appropriate international forums.

That this House notes that the Vardy Foundation is already being subsidised to run independent schools in Gateshead and Middlesbrough at 100 per cent. public expense (after an initial contribution from the sponsor towards capital costs); further notes that it is seeking to set up similar publically funded academies in Doncaster, Leeds, Newcastle, Sunderland and Hull; and calls on the Secretary of State for Education to decline to enter any further agreements with the Vardy Foundation or similar would-be sponsors in respect of new academies unless the sponsors undertake not to operate discriminatory policies and practices and to confine the teaching of creationism to religious education classes.

That this House commends the United Nations for designating 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater (www.wateryear2003.org); recognises the central importance of water resources to the planet's future; notes that 1.1 billion people lack access to safe water; regrets that some 6,000 children die every day from diseases associated with unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene; and calls upon this Government to pursue the commitments it made at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000 and reaffirmed at the Johannesburg Summit in 2002 to halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water.

That this House welcomes the Government's amendment in the other place to put the consideration of sustainable development on the face of the Export Control Bill; notes a number of concerns still remain in the Bill; further notes that the Bill could be strengthened to ensure that it controls the activities of all British arms brokers and traffickers wherever they are located and gives proper consideration to the monitoring of controlled goods after they are located; and calls on the Government to consider these issues when the Bill goes through its final stages in the other place and passes back to the Commons to ensure that the United Kingdom has one of the best export control systems in the world.

That this House condemns the House of Lords' decision not to grant Diane Pretty's husband immunity from prosecution should he help her to die; notes that every opinion poll conducted in the past year registers over 80 per cent. of support for terminally ill patients to be given the choice to die in a manner and at a time of their choosing; believes that this choice should not be determined by the availability of good palliative care; is concerned that doctors practising in the United Kingdom have repeatedly admitted that unregulated assisted dying currently takes place; and believe that legislation to regulate assisted dying, incorporating a broad range of safeguards, is required to empower terminally-ill patients with the choice to die with dignity.
