That this House notes with concern the takeover of Citylink coach company by National Express for ??5.1 million; recalls that Citylink was sold as part of the Scottish Bus Group privatisation in August 1990 for ??265,000; notes that this takeover will give National Express a near monopoly on cross-border coach services; further notes that National Express justifies the takeover by citing the need for a single strong bus company to compete against railways, while at exactly the same time the Government is bent on fragmenting the railways in the name of competition; concludes that once again privatisation has resulted in a massive rip-off of public assets and a reduction in levels of competition; and calls for referral to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.
