In their bilateral meeting, during the Chinese State Visit in November 2005, my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary discussed Taiwan with his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing. My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister also discussed Taiwan with President Hu during his meeting.Our long-standing position on Taiwan remains unchanged: that is, we acknowledge the position of the Chinese Government that Taiwan is a province of China and recognise the Chinese Government as the sole legal government of China. The United Kingdom considers the Taiwan issue is one to be settled peacefully by the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We are strongly opposed to any use of force and urge both sides to engage in constructive dialogue.

There have been no meetings between Ministers at the Department, Network Rail and the Health and Safety Executive to discuss the siting of whistleboards. The railway industry has a duty under health and safety legislation to ensure that risks to those on or near railway lines are reduced. The location of whistleboards is the responsibility of Network Rail, who apply the requirements laid down by the Health and Safety Executive.Train drivers are required to sound train horns where whistleboards are located: on the approaches to footpath crossings and at unprotected crossings, in order to alert pedestrians to approaching trains. This is an important safeguard for those using footpath and level crossings, as there have been a number of fatal accidents at such locations.

Kate Hoey: [holding answer 24 January 2000]: The former Minister for Sport, my hon. Friend the Member for West Ham (Mr. Banks) had a
total of 12 meetings involving either the Chief Executive of Sport England or the Chairman of Wembley National Stadium Limited
between May 1997 and July 1999. The dates and details of those attending are as listed. My Department does not hold copies of Sport
England's notes the publication of which is a matter for them to consider, but maintains its own internal notes of such meetings. In
respect of my Department's minutes of these meetings, representatives of non-governmental organisations took part in those meetings
on the understanding that discussions were in confidence, and I do not, therefore, consider it appropriate that they should be
published.

Mr. Wyatt: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport if he will list the chief executives of the international
sporting bodies resident in the United Kingdom whom he has met since 1 May 1998. [77773]
Mr. Banks: [holding answer 19 March 1999]: Since May 1998, I have had formal meetings with senior representatives from two
international sports federations based in this country, namely, the Commonwealth Games Federation and the International Tennis
Federation. I should stress that, through the Sports Councils as well as regular meetings and correspondence, both my right hon.
Friend the Secretary of State and I have close links with the national governing bodies of sport and are well informed of
developments and issues surrounding international sport federations based in this country.
This Government are fully committed to encouraging international sports federations to locate in the UK and to retaining those
bodies which are already based here.
