Mr. Cohen: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many visits the Export Control Organisation's Compliance Unit

indicating the number of visits to each exporter. [146654]
Dr. Howells: The number of visits made by the Export Control Organisation's Compliance Unit are set out in the table:

The totals include visits to a small proportion of exporters who do not hold Open Individual Export Licences (OIELs), but are
required to keep records as part of their usage of Open General Export Licences (OGELs).
Information regarding the number of visits made to each exporter is not easily accessible and it would, therefore, entail
disproportionate cost to establish the number of visits made to each company.
The Export Control Organisation's Compliance Unit visits exporters who hold Open Individual Export Licences (OIELs) on a regular
basis. Where the exporter holds a licence for military list and certain dual-use goods it is normal practice to undertake such a
visit yearly. For holders of licences for other dual-use goods, visits would normally take place every second year.

Mr. Ruane: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many staff have been employed in his Export Licence Department
in each of the past 10 years. [144175]
Dr. Howells: Licences to export arms and other goods whose export is controlled for strategic reasons are issued by my right hon.
Friend the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry acting through DTI's Export Control Organisation (ECO). The ECO forms part of
the Export Control and Non-Proliferation Directorate (XNP). Historical staff records do not differentiate between the ECO and other
parts of the Directorate.
The figures set out in the table show the number of permanent staff in post in XNP on 1 April each year. The figures include
fractional equivalents for part-time staff.

Before 1994 XNP did not exist in its current form. The export licensing process was undertaken by staff in a number of different
Directorates. It would, consequently, entail disproportionate cost to establish the number of staff involved before that date.
