Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many dentists in (a) Lancashire and (b) England stopped doing NHS
work during the last 12 months for which figures are available. [159378]
Mr. Hutton: Dentists may leave the general dental service (GDS) for a number of reasons including retirement and career breaks. Some
departures are only temporary. During the year 2000, the figures for England will be inflated by the transfer of some dentists from
the GDS to some personal dental service pilots.
The number of dentists leaving the GDS in the 12 months ending 31 December 2000 is shown in the table for Lancashire health
authorities and England.

Mr. Simon Thomas: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement about the General Dental Council's decision
not to allow dental patients access to professionals complementary to dentistry, with particular reference to clinical dental
technicians. [157447]
Mr. Hutton: Currently only two groups of professionals complementary to dentistry are registered by the General Dental Council
(GDC): Dental therapists and dental hygienists. The GDC has agreed that additional groups should be registered including clinic
dental technicians whom the GDC proposes should be allowed to work remote from the dental practice, but to the prescription of a
dentist. Amendments to the Dentists Act 1984 would be required which we plan, in due course, to submit for scrutiny and debate by
Parliament under section 60 of the Health Act 1999.

Mr. Blizzard: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will introduce free dental treatment for all people over 75 years of
age. [157157]
Mr. Hutton: We have no plans to introduce free dental treatment for all people over 75 years of age; we believe that it is a better
use of limited resources to base help with charges for NHS dentistry on the individual's ability to pay, so ensuring help is focused
on those who need it most. Pensioners who get Income Support pay nothing for their dental treatment and under the National Health
Service low income scheme some are entitled to free treatment, while others, who are not entitled to full remission of charges, can
get partial help.

Hazel Grove constituency was located in Stockport Family Health Service Authority (FHSA) at September 1992. From April 1996

1997 and 2000.

Ms Rosie Winterton: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about the pay of medical and dental
officers in the armed forces. [157531]
Mr. Hoon: The Supplement to the 2001 Report of the Armed Forces' Pay Review Body making recommendations on the pay of Service
medical and dental officers has been published today. Copies of the Supplement are available in the Vote Office and the Library of
the House. I wish to express my thanks to the Chairman and members of the Review Body for their work in producing this Supplement.
In line with the increase recommended by the Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body, the Review Body recommends an overall pay increase
for Defence Medical Services medical and dental officers of 3.9 per cent. The Review Body also recommends a 6.2 per cent. increase
for certain categories of junior doctors and a 4.2 per cent. increase for general medical practitioners, inclusive of the overall
3.9 per cent. increase. In addition, there are recommendations for additional payments to general medical and general dental
practitioners' pay scales.
The additional cost to the Defence Budget will be £4.5 million. This will be met within existing departmental expenditure limits.
The Review Body's recommendations are to be accepted in full, with implementation effective from 1 April 2001.

Romsey constituency was located in Hampshire Family Health Service Authority (FHSA) at September 1992. From April 1996 Hampshire

Mr. Breed: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the criteria his Department uses in assessing whether NHS
dentistry is available to those who need it; and how many extra dentists will be required to ensure full availability, on these
criteria, by 2001. [143259]
Mr. Hutton: We are committed to making National Health Service Dentistry available to all who need it by September 2001. The key
test for this target will be whether callers (to the health authority or to NHS Direct) can be offered dentistry.
There are more dentists working within the General Dental Service than ever before. In England there are now about 18,040, over
1,600 up on 1997. Availability problems are not caused by a shortage of dentists but by the amount of time dentists dedicate to
private work. To address this problem the dental strategy, "Modernising NHS Dentistry: Implementing the NHS Plan", offers incentives
to NHS dentists to maintain and increase the amount of NHS work they do. The strategy also allows health authorities to commission
personal dental services in areas where there are access difficulties.
