[152526] Yvette Cooper: [holding answer 6 March 2001]: The inter-ministerial group to improve children's diet and activity was set up to: examine the findings of the national diet and nutrition survey in the light of health implications review current Government activity and policies which influence the diets and physical activity levels of children and young people consider further opportunities for action to improve the diets and activity patterns of children and young people and improve their short and long-term health. The group includes the Department of Health, the Department for Education and Employment, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, the Food Standards Agency and the Health Development Agency. Last year, the group discussed diet and nutrition and, in particular, the low levels of fruit and vegetable consumption among children. This led to the development of the national school fruit scheme whereby all 4 to 6-year-olds will receive a free piece of fruit every school day by 2004. The group has also influenced the development of the healthy schools programme and its increased emphasis on diet and nutrition. The group will meet shortly to discuss physical activity and sport among children and young people. It will build on existing work on school sport, the national healthy school standard on physical activity and safe routes to school. It will address future opportunities for action in the light of the findings of the Comptroller and Auditor-General in his report "Tackling Obesity in England".

[152523] Yvette Cooper: [holding answer 6 March 2001]: The NHS Plan emphasises that health is a key priority for Government. We are taking action to step up the cross- governmental focus on inequalities and public health. This includes close working between the Department and that of my right hon. Friend in areas such as physical activity and obesity. The importance of physical activity is emphasised in the national service framework for coronary heart disease which requires that by April 2001 all national health service bodies working closely with local authorities will have agreed and be contributing to the delivery of the local programme of effective policies on increasing physical activity. The Department of Health and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport work closely together on the public health elements of the new opportunities fund's healthy living centre initiative. Last year the fund provided over £6 million to the Countryside Agency and the British Heart Foundation to run the "Walking, the Way to Health" initiative. As part of our on-going collaboration, this Department and that of my right hon. Friend will consider the potential for developing joint targets and joint appointments. The inter-ministerial group to improve children's diet and activity, set up by the Minister for Public Health will also consider cross-departmental action to promote the health benefits of exercise, sport and other forms of physical activity and to tackle increasing levels of obesity. The group will assess what is already being done and discuss proposals for future joint working as set out in "A Sporting Future for All: the Government's Plan for Sport". The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, in conjunction with the Department for Education and Employment, has developed a number of initiatives to improve opportunities for children to enjoy high quality physical education and sporting activity in schools and the community.

Mr. Hepburn: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what measures he is introducing to encourage healthy eating and exercise and to promote good health in the Jarrow constituency. [148746] Yvette Cooper: Parts of the Jarrow constituency have been classed as an area for special action within the Tyne and Wear Health Action Zone (HAZ). The HAZ co-ordinates a positive health campaign within the constituency which tackles areas such as smoking cessation, healthy eating, health promotion, accident prevention and physical activity. Examples of projects within the Positive Health Campaign include the Jarrow Festival smoking cessation project; positive health campaigns at St Aloysius and Greenfields Schools; an aromatherapy project at the PHAB Club; Fitness Up North; a rehabilitation service at the Charles Palmer Centre, Palmer Community Hospital; an older persons information and advice centre; a mobile chip pan fire demonstration unit; a weekend contraception service and the appointment of education for health and healthnet workers. In addition to the above, the South Tyneside Health Care NHS Trust's Palmer Hospital is affiliated to the World Health Authority's health promoting hospital initiative and is involved in the provision of health related information for patients. The Community Learning Centre project uses the district hospital site as a computer and training access point for the South Tyneside College. The Food Education and Action in South Tyneside partnership with the local authority aims to revive the place of healthy eating among young people. Smoking cessation initiatives include specialist clinics and "smokefree schools awards". Finally, the trust gives seminars to local employers on health issues such as developing policies on stress, smoking and alcohol.
