Mr. Drew: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the Government's policy towards midwife-led
maternity units; and how much of the recently announced extra expenditure for maternity services will be allocated to them.

Yvette Cooper: [holding answer sent 10 May 2001]:
Every single maternity unit in the country will benefit from the extra investment of £100 million which was announced recently. All
maternity units, including midwife-led units, will have the opportunity to submit a bid to their regional heath authority to help
modernise and improve services. No decisions have yet been made on the allocations to individual regions.
We believe that women must have more choices over the maternity care they receive. The National Heath Service provides a variety of
types of care for women during pregnancy and childbirth including care in midwife led units. We would expect to see this variety
continue, offering individual choice whenever possible.
The Maternity and Neonatal Workforce Working Group that has recently been set up by the Department will advise the Department on
models of care, working practices and standards for maternity and neonatal care, to ensure the best outcomes for women and their
babies.

Dr. Iddon: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will publish his proposals for the future regulation of health
professions. [156890]
Mr. Denham: We have today published draft orders under the Health Act 1999 containing provisions to set up a new Nursing and
Midwifery Council and a new Health Professions Council. These will replace the existing United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing,
Midwifery and Health Visiting and the four national Boards, and the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine. The orders
will be published for three months before debate in Parliament. A period of consultation will last until 1 June 2001. Copies of both
draft orders will be placed in the Library.
Appointments to the shadow Nursing and Midwifery Council and Health Professions Council are under way. These appointments should be
made in early April for the shadow Councils to start work as soon as possible afterwards. The shadow Councils will have the status
of advisory groups until the new Councils are statutorily established in April 2002.

The system of classifying National Health Service staff by occupation code introduced in 1995 has proved successful, improving
quality of information and at the same time reducing the burden on data suppliers.

Mr. Harvey: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many extra nurse, midwife and health visiting training places will be
created in each year from 2001 to 2004 expressed in the same terms as the figures in NHS Plan; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denham: As a result of the NHS Plan there will be 5,500 more nurses, midwives and health visitors being trained each year than
today. Our latest forecast is for 20,325 places in 2000-01, an increase of 1,618 on the 1999-2000 baseline figure of 18,707. We plan
to commission a further 1,000 places in 2001-02 and apportion the remaining increase over 2002-03 and 2003-04.

Mr. Alan Simpson: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if an experienced Supervisor of Midwives post will continue to be
available to the local supervising authority as their designated responsible officer. [143520]
Mr. Denham: The Local Supervising Authority function has been successfully discharged by experienced practising midwives since 1996.
There are no plans to change this.
The United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing Midwifery and Health Visiting has the power to prescribe qualifications for
supervisors of midwives as will the new Nurses and Midwives Council.
