Mr. Simon Thomas: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how much money has been spent on the development and production of a draft Walking Strategy; and when the final strategy will be published; [132357] (2) what initiatives his Department has implemented to reverse the decline in people choosing to walk their journeys as a means of travelling; [132358] (3) what plans the Government has made to establish a National Walking Board to implement the findings of the draft walking strategy; [132359] (4) what plans the Government has made to establish a walking website as a resource for promoting walking as an alternative way of travelling short journeys. [132360] Dr. Howells: My Department issued a discussion document to inform our strategy on walking on 30 June. "On the move: by foot" sought views on how we might improve conditions for pedestrians and increase levels of walking. The consultation period closed on 26 September. We shall consider carefully all responses received to determine the need for future resources, institutions and additional specific guidance. It is not possible to quantify accurately the costs to Government and to list the many organisations and individuals who have contributed to the development of our strategy on walking to date. We aim to publish a follow-up document before the end of this year. My Department has implemented a range of initiatives which support sustainable travel options, including walking journeys. These focus on school and workplace travel and traffic management measures. My Department has pledged part-funding to an alliance of Living Streets, London Walking Forum and the Ramblers Association for the development of an interactive website for practitioners and the public. It will bring together news on publications, conferences, training and good practice, as well as providing a forum for advice and exchange of views. The Government's 10 Year Transport Plan and Liveability agenda fully recognise the benefits to the environment of more journeys on foot. The recently- established cross-Whitehall Activity Co-ordination Team is also considering how best to promote the health benefits of routine physical activity such as walking.

Tom Brake: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what progress he has made against the targets set in the 1997 walking strategy; [126548] (2) what recent research he has conducted into the average annual distance walked by a UK (a) adult and (b) child in each of the last six years; [126549] (3) if he will make a statement on the walking-related spending in the 10-year transport plan for each year of the plan; and what walking-related spending was allocated in the last six years of local transport plans. [126550] Dr. Howells: My Department has no walking targets, but the National Travel Survey shows that the average distance walked in Great Britain each year by adults (16 years and over) and children (under 16 years) for the last six periods for which data are available is as follows: Miles per person per year _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Adults (16+) Children (under 16) 1994-96 197 208 1995-97 193 200 1996-98 191 201 1997-99 189 198 1998-2000 190 200 1999-2001 186 200 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. The National Travel Survey excludes walks of less than 50 yards and those that are away from the public highway unless both the surface is paved or tarred and there is unrestricted access. The Government are providing very generous transport investment funds to local authorities-- amounting to £19 billion over the 10-year plan period. However, we do not ring-fence funds specifically for walking schemes. The Government believe local authorities should be able take an integrated approach, using investment funds in the way that best suits local circumstances. Our approach to funding reflects this. Decisions about walking-related spending are therefore for local authorities. The Government require local authorities to plan better facilities for walkers, and report what they have delivered. We take this information into account in our decisions on overall funding allocations.

Mr. Gray: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what funding has been available for the maintenance of long-distance trails in each of the last four years; what estimate she has made of the cost per kilometre of (a) restoring and (b) maintaining long-distance trails; and what budget is available for the repair and maintenance of the Ridgeway. [85213] Alun Michael: Through the Countryside Agency DEFRA funds 75 per cent. of the cost of maintaining National Trails. The other 25% is funded by the highway authorities.
