Mr. Drew: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department into how many languages the leaflets produced for migrant workers, resulting from recommendations from the Operation Gangmaster, have been translated. [196757] Mr. Browne: Operation Gangmaster is a Government initiative designed to bring different Departments and agencies together to tackle abuses by rogue labour providers. This initiative has not produced any specific recommendations to translate information for migrant workers. However, the Government have been active in making translated information available and has had regard to recommendations previously made on this issue by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, of which my hon. Friend is a member. Earlier this year, the Home Office produced a leaflet and guidance notes for applicants to the accession worker registration scheme in relevant languages. These outlined the details of the scheme and gave advice to workers rights. The Trades Union Congress also produced their own leaflet on workers' rights and the Home Office met the cost of producing translations of this leaflet in Hungarian, Estonian, Czech, Latvian, Slovak and Polish. In response to specific concerns about the mistreatment of workers, the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have worked with the Portuguese community and the TUC to produce leaflets explaining the rights of workers in Portuguese. The DTI has also worked with the Polish and Lithuanian Governments to produce bilingual leaflets on employment rights for their nationals. These were launched in June.

Helen Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what steps he is taking to ensure that there are adequate numbers of teachers available to teach foreign languages in primary schools. [197640] Mr. Charles Clarke: There has been considerable progress on the development of language learning in primary schools, underpinned by the launch in December 2002 of the Government's National Languages Strategy for England. Implementation of the Strategy is being driven by Lid King, the National Director for Languages. The Strategy recognises the importance of developing a workforce and resources to support successful implementation of primary language learning, and much of our work to date has focussed on these areas. In developing a school workforce, we are building up a cadre of specialist teachers and non-teacher specialists to support primary language learning. 580 places have been allocated this year for Primary Initial Teacher Training with a specialism in French, German, Spanish or Italian, and we intend to expand this programme further next year. This means that over 1200 teacher trainees will have been trained by the end of this year. In addition we have allocated 50 primary MFL places a year to the Graduate Teacher Programme. For existing teachers, we have funded primary MFL Advanced Skills Teacher posts and are working with the TTA to develop and pilot CPD courses for existing primary teachers to enhance language skills and MFL pedagogy. For non-teacher specialists, we are working with the British council to extend the foreign language assistants programme into primary schools, and are developing training for teaching assistants to support primary language learning.

Mr. David Atkinson: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what projects are undertaken by (a) British embassies and (b) the British Council to offer members of overseas parliaments free lessons to learn the English language; and if he will make a statement. [195707] Mr. Mullin: Neither the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), nor the British Council runs centrally- funded programmes to provide free English lessons to overseas parliamentarians. The British Council provides English language training on a repayment basis. Where this is sponsored by other organisations, including FCO posts, it may be free to participants, including parliamentarians. Although central records are not kept, and the following list may not be definitive, these projects have been carried out by the British Council on behalf of the sponsoring bodies indicated: _________________________________________________________________________________________________.
