Dr. Ladyman: Information is not available in the form requested. The Department does not hold data on the number of people who
receive a particular medication. However, the figures in the table show the total number of prescription items of methylphenidate
hydrochloride dispensed in the community for a 12 month period up to June 2004. Ritalin is one brand of the drug methylphenidate.

Dr. Ladyman: Information is not available in the form requested. Data is not held on the number of people who receive a particular
medication. However, the figures in the following table show the total number of prescription items of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride
dispensed in the community in England in the last six years. In 2003, Ritalin accounted for 40 per cent. of the prescription
items of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride. Other brands of Methylphenidate, Concerta and Equasym, accounted for 43 per cent. and
17 per cent. respectively of the total prescriptions issued.

In 2003, it is estimated that around 90 per cent. of the 314,500 prescription items dispensed in the community were to
children (children under 16 and young people aged 16 to 18 in full time education). This proportion has been similar over recent
years.

Ms Rosie Winterton: Information on the number of prescription items and the net ingredient cost of all anti- depressant drugs, and
all Ritalin drugs dispensed in the community in England, from 1985 to 2003-04 (April to September only) has been placed in the
Library.
The Department of Health does not estimate prescription figures. However, data for both antidepressant drugs and for Methylphenidate
Hydrochloride appear to be a rising trend, and the data for the first half of 2003-04 suggest that the total 2003-04 figure will be
higher than the 2002-03 figure.

Mrs. Calton: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment he has made of the long-term effects of Ritalin. [145816]
Dr. Ladyman: Ritalin is indicated as a part of a comprehensive treatment programme for attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) in children over six years of age where remedial measures alone prove insufficient. In October 2000 the National Institute
for Clinical Excellence (NICE) published an appraisal of the use of the drug methylphenidate (main brand name Ritalin) in the
treatment of childhood ADHD and issued clinical guidelines for its use, including the need for regular monitoring of children
receiving this therapy. NICE recommended long-term follow-up of adverse effects and the potential for misuse of the drug in
assessing long-term benefits and health gain into adulthood.
As with all medicines, the safety of methylphenidate is continually monitored by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory
Agency and the independent advisory body the Committee on the Safety of Medicines. Comprehensive information on the use of
methylphenidate, including possible side effects, contraindications and precautions is contained in the summary of product
characteristics produced by the manufacturer and approved by the licensing authority.

In 2002, around 91 per cent. of the 254,000 prescription items were dispensed in the community to children (children under 16 and
young people aged 16 to 18 in full time education). An estimated 1 per cent. of the items were dispensed to people aged 60 and over
with the remainder being dispensed to other adults. These proportions have been similar in recent years.

National health service bodies are expected to meet the costs of prescriptions from their unified allocations, which have increased
on average by over 9 per cent., over the three years starting from 2002-03.

entity Donepezil Hydrochloride. Aricept is the only brand. There are no generics available. Concerta is included in BNF Section 4.4
(Central nervous system stimulants), and is a brand of the chemical entity Methylphenidate Hydrochloride. Concerta is one of many
brands of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride, including the generic. Risperidone is a chemical entity and is included in BNF Section 4.2
