Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what recent assessment he has made of the participation
of Muslim women in the labour market. [198379]
Jane Kennedy: I have been asked to reply.
Labour Force Survey Spring 20041 data shows 34 per cent. of Muslim women are active in the labour market compared with
73 per cent. of all women. We have a strategy in place to help disadvantaged ethnic minority groups improve their access to
employment, including those from Muslim communities, and this is being taken forward by the Ethnic Minority Employment Task Force.
Muslim women have access to the full range of help offered by Jobcentre Plus both mainstream programmes and specific measures, such
as Ethnic Minority Outreach, to help attract and support those facing significant barriers to work.
We are undertaking research to improve our understanding of the problems faced by ethnic minorities in getting jobs. Current
research projects include a survey of the barriers faced by inactive and unemployed Pakistani and Bangladeshi people, both men and
women.

and stability of Thailand and (c) the possible implications of Thai instability for British interests in the wider region.

Mr. Alexander: We are concerned by the separatist violence and related deaths in southern Thailand. We remain in close contact with
the Thai Government about the situation.
The vast majority of Thailand's Muslims are opposed to extremism and terrorism. We believe, however, that there are a number of
small domestic extremist groups involved in terrorist activity in southern Thailand. Terrorism is a challenge to the peace and
security of Thailand.
We believe that separatist violence is unlikely to move beyond the borders of Thailand. Our travel advice for Thailand reflects our
assessment of the implications for the security of British nationals. We currently recommend against all but essential travel to the
far southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Nathariwat and Songkhla. The travel advice is regularly reviewed.

Keith Hill: The Government are aware of the barriers faced by social tenants who wish to use Sharia'a compliant loan finance
packages to purchase their homes under the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire schemes. These barriers exist in respect of both
freehold and leasehold sales. To address them, the Government are considering ways of facilitating the sale of social homes to such
tenants on voluntary terms. It intends to issue proposals for consultation soon.

Mr. Blunkett: The appropriate authorities closely monitor every word and statement that AI- Muhajiroun's representatives make. We
are fully aware of their activities. We have made our position very clear -Al Muhajiroun represents neither the Muslim community or
their views. We absolutely reject their offensive statements, as have the vast majority of Muslims in the UK.

Mr. Dismore: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps he is taking to permit Muslims to buy leasehold property on the same
or similar basis to freehold within the provisions in the Budget to prevent double stamp duty and allow purchases without payment of
interest as a consequence. [188013]
Mr. Timms: The Government want to see consumers benefit from a wide choice and innovation in the financial services market. The
Finance Act 2003 introduced two reliefs (s72 and s73) for purchases funded by "alternative property financing", which enables
individuals to finance a property without paying interest. The combined effect of these reliefs is to place the amount of stamp duty
land tax due when purchasing property using these arrangements on a level footing with the amount due on the purchase of property
when using `conventional' mortgage products. This will remove a significant barrier to the development of alternative property
financing, thus benefiting a range of consumers with increased choice in the mortgage market.
The legislation does not discriminate between freehold and leasehold properties, so both can be purchased using alternative property
financing without a greater quantity of stamp duty being incurred than under a conventional mortgage.

Mr. Lyons: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent discussions he has had with the Government
of Bangladesh on protecting the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in that country. [178133]
Mr. Mike O'Brien: We continue to be concerned about the situation of Ahmadiyya Muslims in Bangladesh, and raise this regularly with
the Bangladeshi Government. I did so with the Bangladeshi High Commissioner in London during his introductory call in January. The
British High Commission in Dhaka raises the subject regularly, most recently when our High Commissioner met the Bangladeshi Foreign
Minister on 19 May. My right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for International Development (Hilary Benn), raised our
concerns about the general law and order situation with the Bangladeshi Prime Minister on 25 May in Shanghai.

Clare Short: To ask the Prime Minister what action he is taking to (a) bring about an end to the killing of the black Muslim
Sudanese of Darfur and (b) secure access for humanitarian assistance to relieve their suffering. [175840]
The Prime Minister: I am deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Darfur. Following the cease- fire agreement of
8 April between the Government of Sudan and the Darfur groups, we are calling on all parties to co-operate fully with the
Africa Union-led ceasefire monitoring mission. We are also considering how we can contribute to this.
I wrote to the Sudanese President earlier this year emphasising the Government's concern at the situation in Darfur. We continue to
hold discussions with the Sudanese Government on access for humanitarian assistance and my right hon. Friends the Foreign Secretary
and the Secretary of State for International Development raised the matter with the Sudanese Foreign Minister during his visit to
London on 11 May. The Sudanese Foreign Minister has now announced new measures governing the issue of visas and travel
permits to humanitarian workers wishing to travel to Darfur.
We hope that these measures will facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to a population in great need and will be
closely monitoring their implementation. We have already committed £16.5 million in response to the crisis and are urging
other partners to contribute as well.
