[208642] Ms Blears: The available information is given in the tables. Tables 1 and 2 give the number of offences recorded by the police in the Essex police force area and the Southend Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) area. Recorded crime data is published on a financial year basis and data at CDRP level is only available for six key offences for 1999-2000 and 2000-01 but for all offences from 2001-02. Tables 3 and 4 give the number of defendants proceeded against and found guilty in the Essex police force area and South East Essex petty sessional area. Court proceedings data is published on a calendar year basis. Data for 2004 will not be available until the autumn. Because recorded crime deals with offences and court proceedings deals with defendants, the two data sets are not directly comparable. Mr. Amess: To ask the Solicitor-General how many (a) fraud, (b) forgery, (c) gun crime, (d) internet crime, (e) robbery, (f) snatch theft and (g) alcohol-related violent offence cases the Crown Prosecution Service has brought in (i) Essex and (ii) England and Wales in each year since 1997; and how many of these resulted in (A) conviction and (B) acquittal. [210455] The Solicitor-General: Gun crime, internet crime and alcohol-related violent offences are offences which cannot be separately identified on the Home Office Court Proceedings Database. Snatch theft is categorised as theft from the person. The table sets out the relevant figures for the other requested categories. The figures relate to persons for whom these sentences were for the principal offences for which they were found guilty. When a defendant has been found guilty of two or more offences it is the offence for which the heaviest penalty is imposed. Where the same disposal is imposed for two or more offences, the offence selected is the offence for which the statutory maximum penalty is the most severe. Dr. Pugh: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many forged passports have been confiscated or impounded by Customs and Immigration officers in the last 12 months; [207329] (2) how many forged passports have been confiscated or impounded in the last three years by (a) Customs and Immigration officers and (b) the police. [207484] Mr. Browne: The fraudulent use of passports (including forged and counterfeit documents) is taken very seriously by the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, HM Customs and the police. In addition to referrals from HM Customs and the police service, fraudulent travel documents are identified by the Immigration Service at ports of entry as well as during enforcement operations. There is no single central record of the total number of forged passports confiscated or impounded by Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND), Her Majesty's Customs and Excise (HMCE) and the police. However the available statistics show: Since 2001 numbers of fraudulent1 travel documents detected at United Kingdom ports of entry are as follows: 1 In the context of forgery statistics "Travel documents" is the all embracing term for passports, ID cards, refugee travel documents, certificates of identity, seaman's books and visas. _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Number 2001 6,601 2002 9,664 2003 7,985 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Figures are not available to indicate how many of these documents were detected by Customs or Immigration Officers or by the police. In addition, since 2001 the National Document Fraud Unit has had a permanent presence in the main offices of IND in Croydon, following a pilot exercise which revealed large numbers of fraudulent travel documents being submitted in support of applications for leave to remain. [204452] Mr. Browne: Figures are not kept centrally within the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) for the number of forged passports impounded each year. Since 1997 numbers of fraudulent travel documents detected at United Kingdom ports of entry are as follows: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Number 1997 4,411 1998 6,338 1999 5,516 2000 5,394 2001 6,601 2002 9,664 2003 7,985 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Since 2001 the National Document Fraud Unit (NDFU) has had a permanent presence in the main offices of IND in Croydon, following a pilot exercise which revealed large numbers of fraudulent travel documents being submitted in support of applications for leave to remain. Fraudulent documents detected by NDFU in Croydon from 2001 are: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Number 2001 360 2002 461 2003 837 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. The NDFU makes a significant contribution to work being carried out internationally in the EU, International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and G8 to disrupt the work of forgers and to encourage states to impound, and thereby withdraw from circulation, forged and fraudulent passports and other travel documents detected. It also works closely with travel document issuing agencies in order to combat identity fraud and support the operation of border controls.
