The road can be considered in three lengths; from the M1/M6 motorway interchange to A1 west of Huntingdon, A1 Huntingdon to A11 east of Cambridge, and A11 to Felixstowe.The latest obtainable figures of traffic flow data are for the year to August 2007. The tables show annual average weekday traffic flows, which is defined as the average of flows for all weekdays (Monday to Friday) within the year.The tables show for each of these three lengths of the A14: the three busiest links between junctions on each length, the annual average weekday traffic flows for each length, and the highest daily traffic flow over the last quarter for each length. Both directional flows of traffic, eastbound and westbound, are shown.

The Highways Agency is finalising an options appraisal on how to improve the capacity of the A14 around Kettering, which I expect shortly.It is too early to give a firm indication of any announcement on proposals that might emerge from my consideration of the Highways Agency's work.

The A14 between M1 junction 19 at Catthorpe and junction 2 at Kelmarsh has particularly long uphill gradients. This section of road was included in a study carried out in 2002 which analysed long uphill gradients along the A14 trunk road. The study identified problems with congestion caused by overtaking HGVs at this particular location.The two sections of the A14 between Catthorpe and Cold Ashby eastbound and between Kelmarsh and Cold Ashby westbound, are clear of junctions and it was for this reason that this particular section of the A14 was selected for the trial project.The Highways Agency aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety. Through this trial, which restricts HGVs from overtaking along this busy section of the A14, it is expected that journey times will improve and the traffic will flow more smoothly.Traffic behaviour on the A14 was monitored prior to the trial and will continue to be monitored, during and after its 18-month duration. Depending on the findings, the Agency will decide whether or not to make the restriction permanent.There are no current plans to restrict heavy goods vehicles from overtaking on the M18.

I have visited the sites and spoken to developers, councils and development agencies, and I will continue to do so. I will commit the Highways Agency to working closely with everyone in the area to ensure that we come up with the best possible solution for local people.

Under the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 code of practice on litter and refuse, sweeping and clearing the majority of the trunk road network is the responsibility of the district and borough councils through which they pass.
Litter clearance of the layby on the A14 trunk road eastbound, adjacent to the M6, is the responsibility of Harborough District Council.

[holding answer 6 December 2006]: No provision exists for the payment of compensation for losses arising specifically from the implementation of Operation Stack. The Highways Agency works closely with all relevant stakeholders to minimise the impact of any disruption of Channel traffic due to, for example, industrial action in France.Whether any other sort of compensation is payable in the circumstances described will depend on the facts of the individual case, on which independent legal advice should be sought.An instance when compensation was paid by the French authorities was in 1996 following the French lorry drivers' dispute which lasted 12 days. Compensation was paid to some UK hauliers in respect of damage to vehicles or loads and for loss of earnings.
