We continue to follow closely developments regarding the issue of reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah. The British Government's
position, and that of the EU, remains that Palestinian reconciliation, if agreed on the basis of the principles set out by President Abbas in his speech of 4 May 2011, would be a positive step for the unity of a future Palestinian state and for reaching a two state solution. We do not presently plan to take any action, as this is a matter for the Palestinians.

We have had no recent discussions with European partners about opening dialogue with Hamas. We continue to follow developments on Palestinian reconciliation closely. We have made it consistently clear that we will engage with any Palestinian government that shows through their words and actions that they are committed to the rejection of violence and pursuit of a negotiated peace. President Abbas has reaffirmed his committement to those principles and we regret that Hamas has to date refused to do so.

We continue to have serious concerns about Iran's support for terrorist groups, including Hezbollah's military wing and Hamas. Iran provides the military wing of Hezbollah with significant financial resources, military equipment, and training. Iranian support for Hamas reportedly continues, although at a lower level since Hamas decided not to support the Syrian regime. Iran's support to such groups is unacceptable, is in direct contravention of UN Security Council Resolution 1747, and undermines prospects for peace and stability in the Middle East.

Our policy on Hamas is clear: We do not have any direct contact with Hamas. Hamas must renounce violence, recognise Israel, and accept previously signed agreements. Hamas must make credible movement towards these conditions, which remain the benchmark against which its intentions should be judged.
