To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the pedagogical rationale and practices of the Ralston-Semler Foundation Lumiar schools, with specific reference to their mosaic curricula.
The Department has not made any direct assessment of the Ralston-Semler Foundation Lumiar schools.
The mosaic curricula the Lumiar schools have developed is a personalised project based curriculum that focuses on developing skills and competencies.
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has undertaken research on individualised instruction but has not evaluated the mosaic curricula or these schools. The Sutton Trust and Durham University have also published an overview of effective pedagogy which notes that discovery learning is not supported by research evidence. This can be found in the attached document.

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their response to the Modern Foreign Languages Pedagogy Review published by the Teaching Schools Council on 18 November.
The Government is committed to increasing the proportion of the population gaining language qualifications. As a result of the English Baccalaureate, the number of students studying a language at GCSE has increased from 40% in 2010 to 49% in 2016.
Additionally, we want to improve the quality of language teaching. We welcome the Teaching Schools Council’s report on modern languages teaching practice in secondary schools and encourage schools and teachers to consider its recommendations in reviewing their current practice.
I am grateful to my right hon. Friend for that question; it is progressing extremely well. In 2012, 58% of six-year-olds passed the check. This year, 81% passed the check. That is a huge improvement in the quality of the teaching of reading in our primary schools.

In-school organisation, such as streaming or setting, is a matter for individual schools, and data is not collected or held by the Department on this matter.
