To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what recent discussions his Department has had with its counterpart in Ecuador on building economic ties with the UK.
The Department for International Trade leads on this issue. Most recently, the Secretary of State for International Trade met his Ecuadorean counterpart, Mr Pablo Campana, on 24 January. Discussions focused on replicating the current broader EU-Andean Free Trade Agreement into a bilateral agreement with the UK, to ensure there is no disruption to our trading relationship as we leave the EU. More widely, British Government officials, including our Ambassador in Quito, are in regular contact with the Ecuadorean government on a variety of bilateral issues, including the economic relationship. UK goods exports to Ecuador more than doubled following the entry into force of the EU Ecuador Trade Agreement in January 2017.

I have spoken with the Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Jose Valencia on three occasions since his appointment on 12 June 2018. We have discussed a range of bilateral matters including the Assange issue.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what the Government's policy is on providing Julian Assange with safe passage to Ecuador.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what the Government's policy is on providing Julian Assange with safe passage to Ecuador.
We have been clear that when Mr Assange leaves the Ecuadorean Embassy, all UK legal processes would need to be completed before he could leave the country. Mr Assange understands that the only way to resolve this issue is to leave the Embassy to face UK justice. No-one is above the law.

My Lords, as the noble Lord, Lord Stevenson, said, I was not sure that I would still be here this evening, but owing to changes in the timetable I am delighted to be here. The noble Baroness has already received advance notice of some of these remarks.

My Lords, there is nothing I like more than to oblige the noble Earl, Lord Sandwich. It was good to hear what he had to say.
Central to our whole approach to European Union matters at this moment is the concept of bringing government home and of increasing our powers of...

My noble friend is absolutely right to ask how trade policy agreements and treaties will be determined after we withdraw from the European Union. In fact, this is a matter that concerns your Lordships’ Constitution Committee, and it has launched an inquiry to investigate the efficacy of our role in...

I thank noble Lords for their contributions. If I breached convention, I offer my apologies particularly to the noble Lord, Lord Stevenson of Balmacara. I was aiming to address some concerns and did it in a different way. Some of these points are absolutely apposite to the SI, while others...

I am obviously heartened that the noble Baroness agrees there is an issue, but there is perhaps one specific aspect on which she might give us a word or two. In evolving situations, what is suitable at one point will not be suitable at another—she has alluded to this herself....

We are trying to make these countries long-term trading partners. We provide support to help build and encourage investment, and it is likely that that will increase the processing capability of some of their plants, and will, therefore, potentially create competition for some of our companies. In a sense, however,...
