I am very happy to congratulate Royal Portrush golf club on hosting the Open and to welcome the fact that the Open has returned to Northern Ireland. We look forward to seeing golfers, particularly from across the United Kingdom, performing well in that particular Open golf. As for being able to join the hon. Gentleman in two weeks’ time, I suspect that I, and the two contenders for the Conservative party leadership, may be rather busy in two weeks’ time, but I will certainly be watching what is happening in the Open with great interest.

Q10
.
Mr Gregory Campbell (East Londonderry) (DUP):
As the Prime Minister enters the endgame of her premiership, will she join me in congratulating the Royal Portrush golf club on celebrating the return, after almost 70 years, of the Open golf championship, where some of the greatest golfers in the world will be coming—and there will even be some golfers from outside Northern Ireland! May I ask whether she and her two potential successors would like to join me in two weeks’ time at Royal Portrush?

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, what discussions Ministers have had with Invest Northern Ireland on maximising inward investment in the run up to the Open Golf Championship at Royal Portrush in July 2019.

Trade promotion is a devolved matter. The UK Government shares the ambitions of Invest NI and Tourism NI in promoting Northern Ireland as a place to invest, visit and do business. I welcome the ongoing work that is happening across a number of bodies in Northern Ireland to maximise the economic contribution of the 148th Open Championship. I know that there is a strong working relationship between Invest NI and the Department for International Trade, and that we are promoting the Open Championship at every opportunity.
That this House congratulates 22-year-old Robert Maclntyre from Oban on securing second place at the 2019 Betfred British Masters finishing the tournament 15 under par with a remarkable final round which included an eagle at the 17th hole and a birdie at the 18th; commends him on the hard work and dedication he has shown in pursing his dream of being a professional golfer and acknowledges the huge contribution made by everyone at Glencruitten Golf Club in Oban in helping him develop from being a promising young talent through to his turning professional in 2017; notes that the people of Oban and Scotland are very proud of what he has achieved already; and wishes him every success in the future.

My hon. Friend will know that tourism is a devolved matter, which is yet another reason for the Stormont Executive to reform quickly. I also urge businesses to use the event as a huge marketing opportunity. Portrush will be a target-rich environment for them, full of potential customers, suppliers and contacts for all sectors of Northern Ireland’s economy—not just tourism. I am sure they will grab it with both hands.

Does the Minister think that it would be a good idea to incorporate into the tourism sector deal a fantastic one-off event that occurs next year, after 68 years’ absence, when the Open championship returns to the Royal Portrush golf club?

I completely agree with the hon. Gentleman. I encourage him to seek an Adjournment debate to see what more can be done to sort out this ridiculous incident.

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, whether funding from the Coastal Communities Fund can be allocated to golf courses that are at risk from coastal erosion.
To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, whether funding from the Coastal Communities Fund can be allocated to golf courses that are at risk from coastal erosion.
The Coastal Communities Fund is a competitive bid-led programme and all applications are assessed against agreed criteria and programme priorities. Projects that address issues of coastal erosion or flood risk management which threaten the development of the coastal economy are potentially eligible for help provided they can demonstrate they will deliver jobs and growth as part of an integrated regeneration initiative.
The administration of the Coastal Communities Fund in Scotland is the responsibility of the Scottish Government. My Hon Friend should contact them for further information about the next competitive bidding round for the Fund (Round 5) in Scotland for which funding will be available from April 2019.
