The UK has deployed a significant support package to the region, including RAF surveillance aircraft in addition to the Royal Navy ships. They will be there to support regional stability and help prevent escalation. Royal Navy ships are configured for a range of scenarios including humanitarian and disaster relief operations.
The UK is regularly engaging at all levels with our Defence partners in the Middle East and will continue to do so as the current situation develops.
We are working with our international partners to prevent this situation spreading and causing wider instability. We remain committed to making progress towards a two-state solution.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many Albion-class Royal Navy ships were available for deployment as of 13 October 2023.
HMS Bulwark is currently undertaking scheduled maintenance, before transitioning into regeneration to replace her sistership HMS Albion which will enter extended readiness later this year.
Until the operational return of the Albion class Landing Platform Dock (LPD) ships, the Royal Navy will continue to operate a credible LPD capability through its Bay class Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary) (LSD(A)).
The LPD and LSD(A) platforms have interchangeable functionality; each complements the other and together they constitute our core amphibious delivery capability. To enable the sustained forward presence of the Littoral Response Groups (LRG) in the coming years, both classes of ship will be pulsed into the deployment of the LRGs around their respective refit cycles.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many British armed forces personnel are currently located in Estonia; and how many will be based in that country in (a) 2024 and (b) 2025 and (c) 2026.
There are currently 982 UK Service personnel deployed to Estonia as part of the UK's enhanced Forward Presence (eFP). A baseline deployment of around 1,000 troops is planned to be deployed in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The eFP is a rotational deployment, the precise number of personnel deployed will vary at any one time and will rise substantially during peak training periods.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what recent discussions he has had with his Estonian counterpart on increasing the number of British troops in that country as part of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what recent discussions he has had with his Estonian counterpart on increasing the number of British troops in that country as part of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence.
The Secretary of State for Defence held a bilateral meeting with the Estonian Defence Minister during NATO Defence Ministers in October, during which they discussed and agreed the UK's enduring commitment to the eFP. During this meeting the ministers also signed a Defence Cooperation Arrangement, which reaffirms the UK's previous commitments to Estonia and outlines future defence cooperation opportunities that the UK and Estonia will explore. Estonia continues to support the UK's approach to the eFP and the current Defence footprint in country.
To ask His Majesty's Government whether there are any UK armed forces in Kosovo; and if so, whether they are within a NATO or EU armed presence.
To ask His Majesty's Government whether there are any UK armed forces in Kosovo; and if so, whether they are within a NATO or EU armed presence.
The UK routinely contributes 41 personnel to NATO's KFOR mission, including an important contribution to KFOR’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capability. Additionally, a defence advisor and a non-resident Defence Attaché support our bilateral relationship with Kosovo.
Following a request from Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and as outlined in the Gov.uk press release published on 1 October 2023, the UK will also deploy the Strategic Reserve Force held at readiness in the UK. Around 200 soldiers from 1st Battalion of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment will join the 400-strong British contingent already in country as part of an annual exercise.
This follows on from the violent attack on Kosovo Police in northern Kosovo on 24 September and increasing tensions in the region.

As a direct result of the lessons identified during and post Operation FORTIS, embarked engineering workforce levels were significantly increased, in recognition of the additional workload and fatigue associated with embarked operations. Since 2021, RAF Marham has been subject to two external third-party audits, with the most recent concluding that previously identified shortfalls had been resolved, or that appropriate corrective action plans were in place. The unit maintains a full internal quality audit programme with regular continuous-improvement events and independent engineering standard evaluations. Readiness for embarked operations is constantly scrutinised, and optimised where required, during regular Carrier Strike multi-disciplinary meetings.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what estimate he has made of the potential cost to the public purse of (a) establishing and (b) standing up for operations the Global Response Force.
The Global Response Force will complement existing structures already in place, combining extant capabilities to deliver a simplified command structure which is more easily deployable worldwide. There is currently no expectation of additional costs of establishing the Global Response Force, but specific spending decisions beyond 2024-25 will be made in the round at the next Spending Review, as is usual.
