The 2005 national results show that standards in both primary and secondary schools are continuing to rise, with improvements at every key stage this year. Since 1997 at key stage 2, English has increased by 16 percentage points (pp) to 79 per cent. and in maths by 13 pp to 75 per cent.. Provisional results at key stage 3 show English has increased by 17 pp to 74 per cent.; in maths by 14 pp to 74 per cent.; in science by 10 pp to 60 per cent.; and in ICT by 19 pp to 69 per cent. At key stage 4 provisional results show the percentage of pupils achieving 5+A*-C GCSEs has increased by 10.6 pp to 55.7 per cent.Standards of educational attainment in both primary and secondary schools in (a) Somerset and (b) the south west show that performance is above that of the national average. Brian Cotter: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills pursuant to his answer of 26 April 2004, Official Report, column 798W, on education finance, if he will break down the total education funding per child in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools in (i) England and (ii) North Somerset; and if he will estimate the sums that would be available for education in North Somerset if the average funding per pupil for primary and secondary schools in North Somerset were the same as for England. [188685] Mr. Miliband: The information requested is not available by sector (primary and secondary) as this is not how the funding is distributed. Therefore the following two tables set out the information requested using pupils aged 3-10 as the most appropriate figures for primary funding and pupils aged 11-15 as the most appropriate for secondary funding. The formula for the Education Formula Spending Share calculation comprises a basic entitlement for each pupil, which is the same across the country, plus a top-up for each pupil with additional educational needs, which is again the same across the country, plus top-ups for areas where it costs more to recruit and retain teachers. Local education authorities with a greater proportion of pupils with additional educational needs or higher average earnings will receive a higher level of funding per pupil. [144604] Ms Estelle Morris: [holding answer 18 January 2001]: The available information for Somerset local education authority area and the parliamentary constituency of Yeovil on class sizes collected in January is shown in the following table. Information on class sizes by parliamentary constituency is not available prior to 1997. Provisional estimates for the year 2000-01 are expected to be published later this year. We have secured early delivery of our infant class size pledge in Yeovil. The most recent figures show that in September 2000 there were no infant classes in the constituency with more than 30 pupils. The size of the average secondary class nationally, at 22, is still five below the average primary class. Secondary headteachers are receiving up to £50,000 in direct grant to spend as they choose. If this were spent on recruiting teachers, the average secondary class size could be reduced by up to 0.8. [148162] Ms Estelle Morris: The following table shows the 2001-02 education SSA per primary and secondary pupil for north Somerset and England. £ _________________________________________________________________________________________________. If north Somerset's SSA per pupil for primary and secondary schools were the same as the national average it is estimated that its 2001-02 education SSA would be £6.3 million higher. Between 1997-98 and 2000-01 funding per pupil in north Somerset has increased by £380 in real terms. In addition to an increase of £3.65 million in education SSA, schools in north Somerset will benefit from an estimated £1.83 million in Direct Grant in 2001-02. The authority will also receive £100,000 as their share of the extra £52 million made available to provide support to help some LEAs manage funding changes in 2001-02. Additionally it is estimated that north Somerset (Weston) Education Action Zone will receive DfEE grants totalling £842,000 in 2001-02 and £692,000 in 2001-02.

[144605] Ms Estelle Morris: [holding answer 18 January 2001]: The available information for the parliamentary constituency of Yeovil on average class sizes collected in January is shown in the following table. Information on class sizes by parliamentary constituency is not available prior to 1997. We have secured early delivery of our infant class size pledge in Yeovil. The most recent figures show that in September 2000 there were no infant classes in the constituency with more than 30 pupils. The size of the average secondary class nationally, at 22, is still five below the average primary class. Secondary headteachers are receiving up to £50,000 in direct grant to spend as they choose. If this were spent on recruiting teachers, the average secondary class size could be reduced by up to 0.8. If Somerset's SSA per pupil for primary and secondary schools was the same as the national average, it is estimated that its provisional 2001-02 education SSA would be £12.6 million higher. Between 1997-98 and 2000-01, funding per pupil in Somerset has increased by £360 in real terms. In addition to a provisional increase of £10.7 million in education SSA, schools in Somerset will benefit from an estimated £5.39 million in Direct Grant in 2001-02.

The size of the average secondary class nationally, at 22, is still five below the average primary class. Secondary headteachers are receiving an average of £50,000 this year in direct grant to spend as they choose. If this were spent on recruiting teachers, the average secondary class size could be reduced by up to 0.8.We have secured early delivery of our infant class size pledge for the vast majority of infants, including in the North Somerset local education authority. In the authority in September this year, over 97 per cent. of infants were in classes of 30 or fewer pupils.

A DfEE survey of maintained secondary schools in England in the first week of September 2000 indicated that there were about 1,000 secondary teacher vacancies. There was a growth of 2,000 in the number of people training to be teachers between 1999-2000 and 2000-01, the first such increase since 1992-93.
