South Western Railway Sunday services between Yeovil and London Waterloo have been challenging. Over the past 13 rail periods, 79.04% of services have departed within three minutes of their advertised departure time, with 96.73% departing within fifteen minutes. I am meeting South Western Railway on performance issues, as is being done with all Operators, later this month.

There are currently no plans to review the service between London and Yeovil. South-Western Railway is in continued contact with the Department regarding its service provision, including on the West of England line on which Yeovil sits. When reviewing services, the Department needs to assess business cases and balance demand with value for the taxpayer in its considerations.

The Government has made no assessment of the provision of rail transport between Yeovil and Taunton, or any comparison of the journey times between the two towns by car and by rail.
However, it is committed to upgrading the A303 and A358 to provide a high quality dual carriageway from Taunton to the M3.

South Western Railway has applied to Network Rail to run later services to Yeovil for the timetable change on 15 December this year. The new timetable is currently being developed through the rail industry's timetabling process led by Network Rail.

Network Rail’s Wessex Route Study concluded that the forecast levels of growth along the line did not justify the need for additional sections of double track between London Waterloo and Yeovil.

The franchisee (SWR) is expected to plan its train service to meet forecast demand in accordance with its obligations under its franchise agreement. The franchise agreement sets a minimum train service specification that is required to be met and forms the basis for the timetable. Timetable bids for later trains than currently operate would be assessed by Network Rail against factors such as the access that they require to undertake routine planned infrastructure maintenance activities, for example.
