To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, with reference to the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade press release entitled Businesses set to be protected from Argentinian economic coercion, published on 13 October 2026, what enforcement mechanisms will be available to UK businesses as...
The Government has announced its intention to introduce measures under the Protection of Trading Interests (PTI) legislation as part of the UK’s response to Argentine measures targeting lawful commercial activity linked to the Falkland Islands. PTI will provide additional protection for UK businesses against attempts to compel compliance with specified Argentine measures applied outside Argentina’s jurisdiction, including by providing legal grounds for UK persons to seek recovery of damages arising from their application.
The Government is prepared to use the tools available to defend lawful British commercial activity, and will continue to consider appropriate measures, consistent with our legal framework and wider policy objectives, as needed. BIST Ministers and officials are aware of a number of companies affected by recent Argentine actions, and have engaged closely with them to understand their concerns and demonstrate Government support. BIST will continue to engage affected businesses and monitor the effectiveness of the UK’s response.
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment her Department has made of the adequacy of consumer protections for purchasers of new-build homes where a developer becomes insolvent before completing associated infrastructure works.
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment her Department has made of the adequacy of consumer protections for purchasers of new-build homes where a developer becomes insolvent before completing associated infrastructure works.
The government recognises the importance of strong consumer protections for purchasers of new-build homes. That is why the Building Safety Act 2022 created a power to require, for the first time, that all new-build homes are sold with a new-build warranty. The government is considering how best to implement this power.
Where a developer becomes insolvent before completion of a new-build home, we recognise that this can create difficulties for purchasers, as developments can be left incomplete and the developer’s insolvency can make obtaining financial redress more challenging.
Where insolvencies occur, we expect local authorities to work proactively with administrators to find new developers willing to take sites forward and deliver new homes alongside the associated infrastructure.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, what routes to financial redress are available to people who incur losses as a result of misconduct by an insolvency practitioner; and whether the Department has assessed the affordability of accessing those routes.

The Insolvency Practitioner Complaints Gateway plays an important role in maintaining confidence in the insolvency regulatory framework. The complaints system provides a means of investigating concerns about the professional conduct of insolvency practitioners and, where appropriate, taking disciplinary action.
The regulatory process is distinct from determining legal disputes or providing financial redress. Where action is taken by an insolvency practitioner on behalf of an insolvent estate, it is for the courts to determine the outcome of legal disputes and whether financial redress is appropriate.
The Department has no plans to change the frameworks for financial redress where losses have been incurred as a result of misconduct by an insolvency practitioner.

To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the extent to which section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 provides sufficient protection for police officers in the execution of their duty.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the extent to which section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 provides sufficient protection for police officers in the execution of their duty.
Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 makes it an offence to use threatening or abusive words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress. This protection applies to police officers carrying out their duties as it does to other members of the public.
Whether particular words or behaviour meet the threshold for an offence will depend on the circumstances of each case. Decisions on arrests and investigations are operational matters for the police, and charging decisions are a matter for the Crown Prosecution Service, who act independently.
In November 2025 the Home Secretary asked Lord Macdonald of River Glaven KC to undertake an independent review of public order and hate crime legislation. Lord Macdonald submitted his report on 29 May and the Government will publish the report, and its response, shortly.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what steps he is taking through the Media Freedom Coalition to help protect journalists at risk.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what steps he is taking through the Media Freedom Coalition to help protect journalists at risk.
The UK is committed to raising violations of media freedom across the world. We believe those abusing or restricting media freedom must be held to account. The Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) provides a powerful collective voice. As co-chairs, we work with our partners around the globe to promote and protect journalists and media workers. The MFC highlights specific issues of concern including the transnational repression of journalists and individual cases in statements and through advocacy. It has 13 Embassy-level networks in key countries such as the Philippines, Mexico and Bangladesh, and has encouraged member country embassies to work together locally in many countries. A range of support is available to individuals at risk of transnational repression, including practical guidance on GOV.UK and via the National Protective Security Authority. The UK also works through the UN and other multilateral fora like the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), to ensure the safety and protection of journalists.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, what steps he is taking to protect people from emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, what steps he is taking to protect people from emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence.
The Government is committed to ensuring that emerging technologies, including AI, are developed and deployed safely and responsibly. Most AI systems are already regulated at the point of use through existing expert regulators and legal safeguards. Government will legislate where needed, based on evidence of serious gaps in the existing framework.
Public sector organisations also have access to guidance and tools to support the responsible use of AI and other data-driven technologies, including the AI and Data Ethics Framework, the Model for Responsible Innovation and the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard.
The AI Security Institute provides independent scientific and technical capability to test and assess advanced AI systems and identify vulnerabilities, helping Government understand emerging risks and strengthen safeguards.
The Government keeps its approach under review as technologies develop and will consider whether further guidance or protections are required to support the safe, reliable and accountable deployment of emerging technologies in public services.

For the record, I do quite like an after-work pint. Constituents I represent run the fantastic independent Courier Brewing Co., and they make cask ale because they love it, but rising business costs and big international breweries dominate markets and make it harder for them to carry on. A pint...

I certainly do, and I am sure the Minister has taken note of the hon. Lady’s comments. In an age of mass-produced, globalised conformity, cask ale remains stubbornly and beautifully local.
I want to bring a Northern Ireland angle to this vital debate, ever mindful of the hospitality industry, our independent...

It is an honour to serve under your chairship, Sir Desmond. I thank my hon. Friends and constituency neighbours, the Members for Burton and Uttoxeter (Jacob Collier) and for Derby South (Baggy Shanker), for securing this important debate.

I welcome the work that the Government are doing, but has the Secretary of State dragged in the chief executive of Carlsberg? This seems to be a pattern of behaviour, happening not just in Burton, but in Wolverhampton as well. It seems intent on closing down all its cask ale...

I was about to answer the right hon. Member’s question. Of course, that would be for the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and I will speak to Ministers directly following this debate. While this debate is not on that particular issue, I absolutely recognise that it...
