Mr. Sheldon: Yes. The Commission has appointed the firm of BKR Haines Watts. The appointment will be for a fixed term of three years
from 1 April 2001. The appointment is renewable for a further two years at the discretion of the Commission.

Mr. Wigley: To ask the Chairman of the Public Accounts Commission what representations he has received on the adequacy of resources
available to the NAO for investigating not-for-profit companies which have been set up at arms length from Central or Local
Government to deliver services to the public and which depend in part or in whole on public finance. [141907]
Mr. Sheldon: The Public Accounts Commission last met on 18 July to consider and approve the National Audit Office's Corporate Plan
for 2001-02 and beyond. This covered a bid for resources for the Office to undertake its financial audit and value for money duties.
These resources include a small provision for the investigation of not-for-profit companies where the C&AG has secured access
to--but not the audit of--records on a case by case basis. However, under existing companies legislation the C&AG is not permitted
to undertake the financial audit of limited companies, nor does he have statutory access rights to limited companies. The Commission
have advocated in their submission to the Sharman Review of Central Government audit that the C&AG should have full rights of audit
and access to such companies.

Mr. David Heath: To ask the Chairman of the Public Accounts Commission what discussions he has had with the Comptroller and Auditor
General on the resources available to the NAO to review the effectiveness and economy of the privatisation of public assets.

Mr. Sheldon: Over the past 10 years the National Audit Office has published more than 50 reports on privatisations and a variety of
public/private partnerships. The Public Accounts Commission last met on 18 July to consider and approve the National Audit Office's
Corporate Plan for 2001-2002 and beyond. The resources to be made available to the National Audit Office will include provision to
enable it to continue its work on this important area.

Mr. Gray: To ask the Chairman of the Public Accounts Commission what assessment he has made of the resources available to the
National Audit Office; and if he will make a statement. [128234]
Mr. Sheldon: It is the main concern of the Commission to ensure that the Comptroller and Auditor-General has the right resources to
undertake his work. The Commission last met on 2 December 1999 to consider the Supply Estimate for the National Audit Office for
2000-01. The Commission took account of the growing work load of the National Audit Office and recommended additional funding for
2000-01 as a result.
While the Commission will continue to monitor the situation, I am satisfied that, at present, the current level of funding for this
work is adequate and that, were the Comptroller and Auditor-General to need more staff or other resources in the future, he would
request extra funding from this House when compiling his annual Supply Estimate.
