Everyone wants to see territory liberated from the murderers of the so-called Islamic State, but is the Foreign Secretary aware of the deep concern over the recent air strikes, which have caused the death of so many innocent civilians, including children? There was no attempt to save the children. Is he aware of how important it is to try to minimise civilian tragedies, and will he make representations accordingly?

I believe the hon. Gentleman is referring to air strikes by the Americans—he did not spell that out. Of course, there have been innumerable barbaric air strikes by the Assad regime, the Russians and others, as I am sure he would acknowledge. The United States has said that it is investigating and will produce a full report.

Every Israeli Prime Minister in the last 20 years has supported a two-state solution, and that is the right way forward. It is the policy of the UK Government and remains the policy of the US Government. The difficulty will be to get a deal that not only allows the creation of the Palestinian state that I think everybody wants to achieve, but protects the security of the state of Israel.

The bust of Charles Bradlaugh was commissioned by the Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art and placed in the Lower Waiting Hall before Christmas. Plans are already in place to install a label close to the portrait bust describing Bradlaugh’s contribution as a parliamentarian.
Is it not the case that the large majority of people in the House of Commons are not in fact Members? There is a constant risk not only on health grounds, with asbestos and the rest, but of a fire, and we certainly do not want a repeat of 1834. Should not those who complain about the cost involved—they are quite likely to come from outside—be told that they have such an absolute right to complain because this place exists?

How will the thousands of people who lost their jobs at British Home Stores feel about the fact that it may take years before the case of Philip Green, the totally discredited and disgraced businessperson, results in his knighthood being taken away or otherwise? Is it not remarkable? People lose their jobs and suffer all the consequences, but this man keeps his billions and his knighthood.

Is it not remarkable? People lose their jobs and suffer all the consequences, but this man keeps his billions and his knighthood.
The hon. Gentleman raises an important issue. Many Members of this House have expressed concern about what happened at BHS and the attitude and approach taken by Philip Green. Whether a knighthood should be taken away from someone is a matter for the relevant committee—I have forgotten the name—which will be examining the case; I understand that it is waiting for the investigations to be completed. This is a matter for an independent committee and it is up to the committee how it looks into it.

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what steps the Government is taking to encourage employers to consider paying above the minimum wage levels set in legislation.
The Government wants to build an economy that works for everyone, where low wage workers are fairly rewarded for their contribution to the UK economy.
We believe that it is essential for employers to ensure that their reward packages are competitive, in order to retain and develop the workers who are fundamental to their success. However, it is ultimately for employers to decide how they manage increases in their wage bill. The Government will hence continue to set a minimum hourly wage, and remuneration above that rate is a contractual matter for the employer and worker.
The Government has committed to ensuring a competitive business environment. The Government’s increase in the Employment Allowance, and reduction in employers’ National Insurance contributions, is estimated to benefit up to 500,000 businesses and charities, and the government’s cuts to the main rate of corporation tax will benefit over a million companies, allowing them to increase the pay of their workers.
