The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) occupies premises owned, leased and managed by the Government Property Agency (GPA) and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), who are responsible for building assets, including the installation and use of rooftop solar panels.
DESNZ is engaging with GPA through its Net Zero Programme, to track GPA and HMRC progress in this area. The GPA intends to undertake feasibility studies and energy audits at a number of sites during this financial year to assess opportunities for rooftop solar panel installation.

Waste, including food waste is tracked across large parts of the Defence Estate through established waste management and sustainability reporting systems. Data on food waste is gathered from facilities management and catering providers to support broader environmental reporting and the Greening Government Commitments.

The department monitors food waste from offices it manages in the UK on a monthly basis. We receive waste data from our office managed by Government Property Agency (GPA) on a quarterly basis, this includes waste disposed of via anaerobic digestion.
Waste management arrangements and regulatory requirements vary by country, therefore food waste across the overseas estate is not always collected separately. Waste from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) offices managed under central Facilities Management (FM) contracts in Asia Pacific and North-West Europe are reported monthly. For all other offices outside of our FM contracts, waste data is captured and held locally where able. The FCDO is working to improve the quality and consistency of waste reporting across its overseas estate where practical within the local contexts.
