To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, what steps he is taking to support the SME sector in Paisley Renfrewshire North constituency; and what steps he is taking to ensure that sector has adequate access to finance and funding for expansion.
The government is committed to supporting SMEs across the UK, including in Paisley and Renfrewshire North, to start, grow and succeed. The Business Growth Service, launched in July 2025, makes it easier for UK businesses to get the advice and support they need to thrive both domestically and internationally.
The British Business Bank helps SMEs access the finance they need through programmes including Start Up Loans and the Growth Guarantee Scheme. Paisley businesses can also benefit from the £150 million Investment Fund for Scotland, which provides debt and equity finance to Scottish businesses.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps he is taking to provide regulatory stability for the banking sector.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps he is taking to provide regulatory stability for the banking sector.
At Mansion House in 2025, the government published its Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy, setting out its ambition that by 2035, the UK will once again be the global location of choice for financial services firms to invest, grow, and sell their services throughout the UK and to the world.
The government heard through extensive engagement with industry that the regulatory environment is one of the most important determinants of UK competitiveness, and feedback was clear on the importance of the UK maintaining its reputation for predictable stable regulation.
The overall calibration of the UK’s regulatory framework requires careful balancing in an increasingly competitive global landscape. That is why the government is committed to ensuring the overall system supports growth, is targeted and proportionate, and is transparent and predictable, as set out in the government’s Regulation Action Plan.
The Strategy also set out the steps the Government and the Bank of England are taking to ensure that the UK’s post-financial crisis reforms and the level of capital in the banking system support sustainable economic growth, including through the Financial Policy Committee’s ongoing review of bank capital requirements. Capital requirements, including those agreed internationally following the financial crisis, have a key role to play in upholding the stability of the UK’s financial system. However, it is also vital to get the balance right to enable UK banks to compete internationally.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will include the use of the death penalty by member countries on the formal agenda for the forthcoming UK G20 summit.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will include the use of the death penalty by member countries on the formal agenda for the forthcoming UK G20 summit.
The UK is committed to the global abolition of the death penalty; this government firmly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle. We continue to support international efforts to encourage all states to establish a moratorium on executions and move towards full abolition in line with global human rights commitments. Planning for the UK's G20 Presidency in 2027 is underway, and the government will set out its priorities in due course.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, whether he plans to make representations to his G20 counterparts for the abolition of the death penalty in member countries; and whether he has made an assessment of the potential merits of proposing a ban on the death...

The UK aviation sector is one of the best in the world. Glasgow international airport, in my constituency, has recently been very successful in attracting new routes. Can the Secretary of State confirm that further such expansion will not be hindered by slow regulatory frameworks?

My constituents in Paisley and Renfrewshire North are feeling the impact of higher energy and petrol prices, and they will appreciate the efforts that my hon. Friend’s Department is making. Would he agree that military action by the world’s superpowers is risking a return to pricing instability, and that all efforts must be made to cease military activities?

I entirely understand the concerns of my hon. Friend’s constituents, particularly in an advanced manufacturing district such as Paisley and Renfrewshire North—I know her constituency well and understand why she is speaking up for her constituents. These events are affecting communities across the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister is taking action at home to support people with energy bills and the cost of living, but we absolutely need to see a diplomatic solution involving negotiations and the reopening of the strait of Hormuz, and to stand up for the fundamental principles of trade and maritime security.
What steps his Department is taking with international partners to help protect freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
What steps his Department is taking with international partners to help protect freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The strait of Hormuz should be open to safe, secure and unimpeded transit, in accordance with international law. In the United Kingdom, the Foreign Secretary and I are working closely with international partners to drive diplomatic efforts to restore navigational rights and freedoms. We continue to make it clear to Iran that it must cease its egregious attacks on shipping and on our partners and allies, and it must engage in negotiations to reopen the strait in good faith.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps her Department has taken to support local authorities with bus franchising.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps her Department has taken to support local authorities with bus franchising.
We passed the Bus Services Act last year, to give local leaders greater control over their bus services. Local authorities can choose the model that works best for their area, including franchising.
We are backing that choice with funding, expert advice and practical support. Although decisions on transport are devolved, I’d encourage the Scottish Government to follow in our footsteps to deliver better outcomes for passengers.
Would the Minister encourage the Government’s traffic commissioner for Scotland to build on the remarkable success of bus franchising in Manchester, and work with the Scottish Government to emulate the success of Manchester’s Bee Network in my constituency of Paisley and Renfrewshire North?
Would the Minister encourage the Government’s traffic commissioner for Scotland to build on the remarkable success of bus franchising in Manchester, and work with the Scottish Government to emulate the success of Manchester’s Bee Network in my constituency of Paisley and Renfrewshire North?
As reporting from Greater Manchester’s Bee Network shows, bus franchising can deliver improved services for passengers, and the Government are taking steps to support the roll-out of bus franchising in England. Obviously, transport is a devolved matter, but I encourage Ministers in Scotland to learn from the success of Labour mayors in England.

Contrary to the implication of the question, through negotiations on the Economic Prosperity Deal (EPD), the UK is the only country to have achieved a 10% tariff for autos within quota, a 0% tariff for pharmaceuticals and a preferential 25% tariff on core steel and aluminium exports.
Furthermore, in April, President Trump announced the removal of tariffs on UK whisky exports, which is worth around £1bn each year.
Discussions on the EPD are ongoing, and the UK continues to engage with the US administration at all levels, working to benefit UK exporters.

By 2030, 11 government buildings will close, including 102 Petty France and 39 Victoria Street, delivering £94m in savings per year from 2032. More departments in London will colocate, enabling greater collaboration on delivering the Government’s Plan for Change.
