Motion that this House has considered domestic farming and food supply. Agreed to on question.
Motion that this House has considered domestic farming and food supply. Agreed to on question.
I beg to move,
That this House has considered domestic farming and food supply.
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Sir Jeremy. Tomorrow the Chancellor of the Exchequer will stand at the Dispatch Box and tell us what this Government intend to do for the economy. Before those decisions...

Absolutely, and that is the focus of my speech today.

I agree fully. Labour often says that that is part of national security, but actions speak louder than words in many ways.
Northern Ireland punches well above its weight. We have less than 3% of the UK’s population, but produce more than 10% of its food output by value. We supply...

I absolutely agree with the hon. Member’s assessment. I cannot be clearer: the family farm tax should be scrapped, and if Labour does not scrap it tomorrow, the party—and particularly its rural MPs—will not be forgiven at the ballot box. The land, sheds and machinery are needed to earn a...

The hon. Member’s farmers will have heard his point very clearly. He is a real advocate for the farming community in his constituency, and he is absolutely right. Driving production overseas will not remove the need for food. It will leave us buying more of it from elsewhere, with less...

Absolutely. Farm payments are critical to ensuring just that. I wholeheartedly agree with the hon. Member, who is another real advocate for our farming and rural communities.
Our farmers will make improvements where there are practical, affordable ways to do so, but they should not have their livelihoods put at risk...

Again, I agree; it is a point well made. Another area in which the Government can help our farmers is public procurement, and they should be doing far more. I have challenged the sourcing of food for Northern Ireland schools. Information provided to me showed that approximately 80% of the...

I absolutely agree. Maybe the Minister can elaborate on that. I have never been convinced that the answer to the disenfranchisement of Northern Ireland is the disenfranchisement of Great Britain. How can laws made elsewhere, without the United Kingdom having a vote on them, be the right basis for governing...

Absolutely. That was my next point: 84% of respondents to this survey have reduced, postponed or cancelled investment. That is really stark. More than half identified inheritance tax policy as a barrier to investment. Farmers are holding back on replacing machinery, improving livestock housing and carrying out drainage work. Ministers...

Will the hon. Member give way?

I thank the hon. Member; he is making a powerful speech to which we can all relate. On hospital appointments, there was discussion that Royal Mail would engage with each of the different hospital trusts. Does he agree that that needs to progress and that there needs to be some...

The right hon. Member is making a powerful speech. Loughgall is in my constituency, and he has rightly said that the East Tyrone killing wing of the IRA was the most barbaric, bloodthirsty wing of the IRA. It is important to remind the Committee of the names of Eva Martin,...

With regards to the OTR letters, the Secretary of State will know that I spoke yesterday on that very issue. The fact that there is clarity today that you are progressing the amendment is welcome. However, on-the-run letters did have effect, as the Hyde Park bomber got away with his...

Scott, aged 30, is a dad, a son, a partner and a much-loved member of the Banbridge community, but he is battling grade 4 brain cancer. Brain cancer is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 40 in the UK, and survival rates are lower than the average across all cancers. Access to clinical trials is negligible, with only 2% of brain tumour patients successfully accessing them. Will the Secretary of State expand brain tumour clinical trials across the United Kingdom, and ensure fair access across all nations?

I pay tribute to the hon. Lady’s constituent, who is obviously undergoing the most difficult of circumstances, and it is exactly because this is such a devastating condition that we have introduced a three-month rapid review of all the research and barriers to getting more patients into trials. We are of course keen to continue to work with the devolved Governments on this, because the research benefits us all right across the United Kingdom. We will be drawing up a framework to get drugs more quickly into trials, and to get more patients into those trials.
That this House expresses grave concern at references to the 'feelings of PIRA (Provisional IRA)' in a police log concerning Drumcree; condemns the Provisional IRA’s campaign of murder and terror; remembers all those killed or injured during the Troubles and the suffering of their families; rejects any terrorist veto over lawful, peaceful activity; calls on the Chief Constable to explain the reference and its influence on policing decisions; further calls on the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to commission and publish a new assessment of the Provisional IRA’s continued existence, structures and activities, specifically examining its links to political parties and any influence or control over their decision-making; also calls on the Government to address the implications for the commitments underpinning power sharing; and insists that policing must uphold the rule of law without fear or favour, rather than reward intimidation.

I will always stand on the side of innocent victims and with those who put on a uniform to protect them, but regardless of whether this Bill passes or not, veterans sadly continue to live in a state of uncertainty and are continually faced with the threat of future lawfare...

That this House congratulates The Faith Mission on celebrating its 140th anniversary since its founding by John George Govan in Glasgow on 14 October 1886; acknowledges the profound and enduring contribution of this interdenominational Christian agency to spiritual, social and community life across the British Isles; recognises its dedicated focus on rural evangelism and outreach, particularly among isolated and less well-served communities; notes its longstanding tradition of open-air meetings, tent missions, Bible conventions and the training of Christian workers through the Faith Mission Bible College; pays tribute to the generations of evangelistic workers, known as Pilgrims, who have carried its message across the British Isles and further afield; highlights the significant local contribution of its regional centres, including the Portadown Camp Centre in Upper Bann, which for over 40 years has accommodated Faith Mission youth camps, church youth organisations and school and university Scripture Union groups; commends the generations of staff, Pilgrims and volunteers who have selflessly served its mission; further recognises that only eternity will fully reveal the fruits of their faithful labour; and wishes The Faith Mission continued success as it proclaims the Gospel and carries forward its vital work of evangelism.
