To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, whether he plans to introduce legislation requiring businesses to undertake mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, whether he plans to introduce legislation requiring businesses to undertake mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence.
In the Trade Strategy, the Government launched the Responsible Business Conduct Review, an evidence-based appraisal of the UK’s current policy approach to responsible business conduct, its impact and options to strengthen it further. This included consideration of the merits of mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence. The review has been completed. With the formation of a new government, we are considering the findings with fresh eyes and will set out our position in due course.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of disbanding the Metropolitan Police’s Roads and Transport Policing Command on road safety in London.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of disbanding the Metropolitan Police’s Roads and Transport Policing Command on road safety in London.
Decisions on force structures and resource deployment are operational matters. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner is best placed to determine how roads policing resources are deployed in response to the threats, risks and demands facing the Metropolitan area.
Effective roads policing plays an important role in keeping our roads safe and reducing the risk of death and serious injury. In making operational decisions, chief officers are expected to exercise their powers proportionately, with due regard to public safety and professional standards. This helps support effective road traffic enforcement and public confidence in policing.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, whether employers found to have underpaid statutory holiday pay as a result of payroll or administrative errors will be subject to public naming by the Fair Work Agency when it begins enforcement of statutory holiday pay in 2027.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, whether employers found to have underpaid statutory holiday pay as a result of payroll or administrative errors will be subject to public naming by the Fair Work Agency when it begins enforcement of statutory holiday pay in 2027.
The recent Government consultation on enforcement of statutory holiday pay sought views on whether employers found to have underpaid holiday pay should be subject to public naming. The consultation closed on 22 September. The Government is currently considering all submissions and will publish its response in due course.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, whether he will use powers under the Product Regulation and Metrology Act 2025 to introduce a requirement for clear external labelling of products containing lithium-ion batteries.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, whether he will use powers under the Product Regulation and Metrology Act 2025 to introduce a requirement for clear external labelling of products containing lithium-ion batteries.
The Government is considering responses to the Product Safety Framework Consultation and will publish its response in due course.
Existing product safety regulations require product traceability and necessary safety information for consumers. Battery-specific labelling requirements are principally addressed through batteries legislation.
The Government intends to consult this autumn on proposal for an aligned UK-wide batteries regime. This will include consideration of strengthened labelling requirements and a mandatory QR code providing access to a digital battery passport alongside other measures.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps he is taking to reduce delays in the processing of VAT refunds by HM Revenue and Customs.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps he is taking to reduce delays in the processing of VAT refunds by HM Revenue and Customs.
HMRC aims to minimise delays in processing VAT repayments by applying automated checks when returns are received and making further enquiries only where necessary. This helps businesses receive VAT repayments promptly, whilst protecting the tax system from error and fraud. HMRC regularly reviews its processes and continues to improve efficiency where possible.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, with reference to the independent Access to Banking Services Review, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of expanding the range of in-person banking services available through Post Office branches.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, with reference to the independent Access to Banking Services Review, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of expanding the range of in-person banking services available through Post Office branches.
The Government is committed to ensuring that people who need in-person banking can continue to access essential services.
That is why the Government commissioned an independent Review into Access to Banking Services, to assess whether changes to access to in-person banking services are causing consumer detriment, the scale of any detriment, and who it affects, including the digitally excluded. The Review will consider access to in-person banking services for both personal and business customers.
As part of this, the Review will consider existing forms of in-person banking provision. The Post Office provides banking services through over 10,000 branches via the Banking Framework agreement and, as such, the provision of services by the Post Office on behalf of banks will be considered as part of the Review.
Alongside the Review, the Government intends to use the Financial Services and Markets Bill to introduce a power to allow action to be taken in future to protect access to banking services, should the evidence support intervention.
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, whether she plans to exempt (a) campsites, (b) activity centres and (c) other overnight accommodation used by voluntary youth organisations from the proposed Overnight Visitor Levy.
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, whether she plans to exempt (a) campsites, (b) activity centres and (c) other overnight accommodation used by voluntary youth organisations from the proposed Overnight Visitor Levy.
Local leaders will be able to choose to introduce a levy as a way to raise money to support growth in their regions. This will apply to short-term, commercially let overnight accommodation. Accommodation or land uses which are not provided on a commercial basis will not be in scope of the levy. Strategic authorities will also have the option, subject to consultation, to exempt certain types of accommodation in their areas. This could include tent pitches, touring caravan pitches and dormitory style accommodation, such as hostels.

What steps he is taking to help tackle backlogs at Croydon Crown Court.
What steps he is taking to help tackle backlogs at Croydon Crown Court.
In Croydon, as elsewhere, we are taking a three-pronged approach to reducing the Crown court waiting list. That involves increasing Crown court capacity, removing the financial constraint on sitting days, driving efficiency in our courts through schemes such as every Crown court having a case co-ordinator, and of course the structural reforms we will bring forward in the Courts and Tribunals Bill.
I visited Croydon Crown court recently and saw at first hand the impact that the delays are having on victims. Backlogs across London have increased by 122% over the last decade, which is having a particular impact on domestic abuse and sexual offence victims. Given that, will the Minister consider listening to Liberal Democrat calls to abandon plans to restrict trial by jury and instead create specialist sexual offence and domestic abuse courts so that those sensitive cases can be dealt with as quickly as possible?

I speak as a fellow London MP and agree that the waiting lists in our London courts are appalling, because behind each and every one of those cases in the backlog there are victims, witnesses and defendants whose lives are entirely put on hold. That is why we have got to run hard at the problem, but getting the backlog down will involve a multifaceted approach. That is why the efficiencies we are making at courts, unlimited sitting days and the blitz courts initiatives we are piloting in London courts are so crucial. As I said, as somebody with a vested interest in seeing London waiting lists come down, I will be glad to work with the hon. Member to see what we can do on that.
That this House expresses alarm at the exposure of UK democracy to the undue influence of an ultra-wealthy minority; notes that donations are uncapped meaning that two individuals have been able to give £72 million to one party in one week; further notes recent investigations reporting foreign money and impermissible donations entering UK politics; believes that this issue is of existential importance for the integrity of our democracy; calls on the Government to introduce a statutory cap on individual political donations as well as launching a cap on party spending limits outside of General Elections; regrets that the Government has not yet used the opportunity of the Representation of the People Bill to do so; and urges the Government to strengthen the Electoral Commission and police enforcement of electoral law.
