What steps his Department is taking to increase trade with Europe.
We are taking two steps to try to drive up our trade with Europe. First, we are seeking bilateral wins with individual countries like the small modular reactors deal that has just been done by Rolls-Royce in Sweden, or opening up the pilot digital trade corridors that we have with Germany and France. We are also seeking to renegotiate a reset with the European Union as a whole. In the words of the Sugababes, we stand ready to “Push the Button”.
The EU is a key trading partner for Scotland, accounting for almost 40% of Scotland’s international exports. Can the Minister reassure my constituents in Glenrothes and Mid Fife that while we wait for a new date for the EU summit, this Government will press ahead with plans to align with more areas of the single market, so that we can continue to remove barriers for our businesses to trade with Europe?

My hon. Friend is absolutely right, not least because in the most recent figures, our trade in goods with Europe has fallen by 2% in the last year, whereas our trade in services has grown by 7%. All of this shows what a shockingly appalling, shameful, despicable deal was done by the previous Government with the European Union. It was bad enough leaving, but the terms on which they left were absolutely appalling for British businesses. We are determined to turn that around, and we will.

Friend assure me that he will work with his Ministry of Defence colleagues to support Scottish yards, including Methil in my constituency? Last month, it delivered the Seahorse pontoon ahead of schedule and on budget, and it has a skilled workforce who are ready to take on new defence contracts, including Programme Euston.

There is no more doughty defender of, or advocate for, the Navantia yard than my hon. Friend. I was delighted to visit the yard with my hon. Friend a few weeks ago, and I congratulate the workforce on completing the Seahorse pontoon ahead of schedule. Having visited the yard, I have seen at first hand the expertise and commitment of the workforce, and of the young apprentices there. They are delivering for all of us.

The UK Government’s £50 million Scottish defence growth deal is a true step change for Scotland’s industrial base. It will support jobs, skills and regional growth. The deal includes £10 million for innovation facilities, both on the Clyde and in Rosyth. Where the SNP will not back Scottish industry, young people or our national security, Scottish Labour and the UK Government will step in.

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, what guidance will be issued to local licensing authorities on the application of gambling impact assessments across the United Kingdom.
Gambling Impact Assessments (GIAs) have now been introduced in the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act. GIAs will allow local authorities to create a presumption against granting new gambling premises licences in a specific area, where there is evidence that additional premises would undermine the gambling licensing objectives.
The Gambling Commission produces statutory guidance for licensing authorities on their role and responsibilities in gambling regulation. The Gambling Commission will consult on and issue guidance to support the introduction of GIAs in due course.

That this House expresses its deep sorrow at the deaths of at least 82 workers in the Liushenyu coal mine explosion in Shanxi province on 23 May 2026; notes with alarm evidence of concealed tunnels, falsified drawings, unregistered labour, and the deliberate removal of life saving safety systems, all pointing to systemic malpractice driven by profit at the expense of human life; condemns the exploitation of workers denied basic protections, accountability and visibility, and recognises that the absence of trackers and accurate records directly worsened the loss of life and hindered rescue efforts; draws stark parallels with the United Kingdom’s own history of mining tragedies where generations of tightly bound communities endured devastating loss due to unsafe practices and weak oversight; pays tribute to the trade union movement whose tireless campaigning in the UK secured hard won rights, stronger regulation and a safety-first culture; warns that the same patterns of deregulation, concealment and corporate negligence seen in this disaster are precisely those unions fought to eradicate; calls on the Government to champion international labour standards and stand shoulder to shoulder with trade unions globally in demanding transparency, enforcement and justice for workers; and urges that the lessons etched into Britain’s mining communities, paid for in countless lives, must never be forgotten and must guide a renewed global commitment to protect every worker, everywhere.
