That this House notes that on World AIDS Day, 1st December 2007, some 33 million people remain directly affected by HIV/AIDS; calls for the UK Government and the international community to continue efforts to achieve the goal of universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010; believes these efforts should be guided as far as possible by detailed annual targets at country level so as to hold governments in both rich and poor countries to account for delivering on their promises; reaffirms the central importance of prevention to halting the spread of the virus and calls for prevention to be central to international efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS; believes that efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS should as far as possible act to strengthen basic healthcare systems so as to aid the fight against other killer diseases such as malaria, and common co-infections such as tuberculosis; celebrates the role of many private businesses operating in poor countries in helping to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS; and calls for governments, businesses and voluntary organisations to work together in tackling the epidemic.

That this House deplores the continuing atrocities in Darfur; notes that the government of Sudan is financially and strategically supporting these atrocities through its oil revenues; further notes that according to the World Bank and sources within Sudan, between 60 to 80 per cent. of the government of Sudan's revenue is spent on the military; supports the work of Sudan Divestment UK (SDUK), which campaigns to end global financial support for the government of Sudan and its military actions through targeted divestment; welcomes the withdrawal of Rolls Royce from the region because of `humanitarian concerns'; further welcomes the joint stance of leaders of the Political Youth Wings in a recent letter published in The Times, who have collectively endorsed SDUK's model of targeted divestment; calls on companies with a commercial relationship with government or government sponsored projects which impart minimal benefit to the country's people and have demonstrated no substantial corporate governance policy regarding the Darfur situation to cease their financial support for the Sudanese government; and further calls on the Government to look into ways of changing national and international business behaviour in the face of the manifest gross violations of human rights.

That this House believes that a fair and just world trading system is vital if poverty is to be eradicated; recognises the devastating effects that protectionist policies in developed countries, particularly the EU's Common Agricultural Policy and US farm subsidies, currently have on the ability of people in poor countries to trade their way out of poverty; recognises the failure of protectionist policies to reduce poverty; and believes that the British Government should champion the benefits of free trade and push the EU and US to scrap their immoral and hypocritical trade subsidies and tariffs, particularly in the agricultural sector, in order to secure a breakthrough in world trade talks.

That this House believes that a fair and just world trading system is vital if poverty is to be eradicated; recognises the devastating effects that protectionist policies in developed countries, particularly the EU's Common Agricultural Policy and US farm subsidies, currently have on the ability of people in poor countries...

That this House congratulates the organisers of Fairtrade Fortnight on their success in raising awareness of Fairtrade products; celebrates Fairtrade as an example of how voluntary consumer choice in the developed world can generate real improvements in the lives of poor people; believes it is important that the momentum generated by Fairtrade Fortnight is carried forward and reflected in British government policy; and calls on the Government to push hard for the EU to table an ambitious offer on agriculture at the World Trade Organisation so as to break the deadlock in the Doha Round of trade talks and to secure a comprehensive deal on freeing up global trade.
