That this House believes that the decision not to outline the specific changes to war pensions at the time of the Budget is an insult to Parliament and to the freedoms which war veterans secured for this nation; and believes that if the Chief Secretary to the Treasury was responsible for covering up the full extent of the cuts he should resign; notes with grave concern that the proposed package of cuts in war pensions will stop 10,000 people a year whose hearing has deteriorated following military service receiving a higher disability pension and to stop the issue of reminders to people to return their claim or seek an increase in entitlement; and believes that such a package is clearly not a measure merely to 'simplify policy and procedures' as claimed in a Budget press release, but instead a cynical attempt to cut social security expenditure at the expense of war veterans and widows who have made immense sacrifices for this nation.

That this House deplores the irresponsible posturing and continued smear and innuendo by the Labour Party over the provision of aid to Malaysia by the ODA, particularly for the Pergau Dam project; notes that statements by the honourable Members for Monklands West, Copeland and others have jeopardised previously excellent trading relations with Malaysia and have therefore seriously put at risk jobs throughout the North of England and Scotland at GEC Alsthom (Liverpool), Kvaerner Bovine (Doncaster), Whessoe (Darlington), Keller Colcrete (West Yorkshire), Hystat Systems Ltd. (Huddersfield), George Turton Platt & Co. Ltd. (Sheffield), Whitley Ltd. (Otley), Reyton Metals Electrical Division (Wakefield), Landon Engineering Ltd. Winder (West Yorkshire), all of whom have contracts indirectly or directly concerning the Pergau Dam; would remind Labour honourable Members of their responsibilities towards the jobs and living standards of their constituents, responsibilities which ought to transcend Labour's obsession with cheap political point scoring; and concludes that Labour's Business Plan for Britain is exposed as the ineffectual fig-leaf for effective policy that it is, as Labour honourable Members appear to be prepared, in practice, to sacrifice the business orders, exports and related jobs of thousands of British workers, for the opportunity to attack Britain's trading partners in the increasingly important South East Asian regional market.

That this House, noting that the BBC carried out a poll of conservative candidates following the local government elections, the results of which revealed extremely favourable attitudes towards the Prime Minister's leadership, is alarmed that this poll has not been released by the BBC on the grounds, specifically rejected by the Harris Research Centre which carried out the poll, of "insufficient size of sample"; and calls on the BBC to stop suppressing the results of the poll, publish it immediately, and in future desist from the practice of commissioning opinion polls purely for the purpose of manufacturing news stories.
